Magazine Submission Guidelines

by Nickolaus A. Pacione
Nickolaus A. Pacione runs his mouth about what he wants with the magazine. There are 13 Issues in print right now and needed a place where it wouldn't be vandalized each hour on the hour.
The magazine’s 13th Issue is in the books and now I am going to go into detail what I seek for the 14th Issue and future issues -- I am looking for novellas that are 16,000-28,000 words plus a few short stories to put in between the novellas. Look at the website for the details of stories I don’t take or will tell you to piss off the moment they’re sent. The magazine had been around since the early part of 2005 and produced 13 issues up to this date -- some of the authors from the magazine came from our very own Horror section of the website.
I sometimes scout writers on this website or on FictionPress.com. I am focusing on the anthology that I am editing right now, and will look at stories for the magazine in between but please get a previous issue of the magazine before thinking about submitting for this because I want people to get a firm idea what I take for the magazine. This is a paying market -- pay about $10-$16.00 for stories then offer an editor’s choice payment for the top story in the issue. Payments for the issues will be sent out again in February.
This is a horror magazine at the very root but the contemporaries are Weird Tales, Withersin, Tales of the Talisman, Relief Journal, Morpheus Tales (I take longer stories for the magazine. The short stories ideal are 2000-6000 words but longer I will take because it will help keep the reader reading the magazine.)
I don’t accept romance of any kind -- the rules of the magazine are posted on the website’s submission guideline information. Some writers are very aware of my rules in the business when it came to submitting stories -- I am strict, I know, it’s because I want the best work to go into the magazine and come out stronger than most. I would take the Christian before I would take someone along the lines of Poppy Z. Brite or Doug Clegg (I will turn away a story that is along the lines of Lost Souls, but if it uses a Richard Matheson type vehicle for characters, then okay let‘s see it -- I don‘t get enough Goth characters in Twilight Zone type stories.) Some people might call that wrong, but if you ask me there are other publications out there for this -- I just want something that sets me apart from the others. I don’t think there will be another magazine like The Ethereal Gazette because it’s old school, and I publish dark tinged creative nonfiction stories that would hold up against the horror stories too.
I pay about $8 for nonfiction entries and artwork goes for about $25.00 for interior. I pay writers via paypal for stories and the issues are good sized for the magazine because I don’t cheat readers out of a good read for their money, they’re getting their money’s worth for each issue. For an average issue that costs $13.90 they are getting a 200 page Royal trade paperback journal and they are also getting an e-book version with Issue 11, Issue 7 and Eight. I will do guidelines on video too so if you see the recent video on my lulu.com spotlight that is the guidelines for the magazine.
The reason I am posting them here is because there are so many who are vandalizing the listing on WritersCafe.org and if I include it in the news here for people who are looking to get published, my magazine is a good vehicle if you want to use it like I used Reality Check to launch my career. I will trade manuscripts with writers too and as I am working on my second full length nonfiction book, I am taking the time to look over manuscripts for the magazine and for the anthology. The anthology is a non-paying market. Since Ralan.com gave me the bite me over the magazine that leaks submissions, I would never leak a submission on someone if I reject the story.
I do not accept erotic horror of any kind, but I will make an exception for a story like what Edgar Allan Poe wrote of how poetic it is of the death of a beautiful woman. I revisited this theme with Passenger and again with GAME OVER. I am looking for the next Richard Matheson to emerge from the shadows and will take a period horror piece or two for the magazine but try to keep the science fiction stories current -- meaning keep it within the life time of the writer. I have a soft spot for modern day science fiction stories and looking for some Gothic tinged Science fiction, there will be always room for a true story or two in there -- I am looking for a few Christian testimonies that are dark background, as in like I did with Issue 10 of the magazine. I broke in so many in that issue and a few from that issue came on for the namesake anthology reboot.
This is not Pink Triangle Productions or The Eerie Gay Man Gazette, nor is it The Ethereal Gayzette but The Ethereal Gazette or as the writers of the magazine call the magazine affectionately The Gazette for short. I would like to eventually see an all authors den issue of the magazine because there are a lot of talented authors who emerged from here from the ranks of the Den haunting the horror and science fiction sections. I will take writers from the memoir section if they are dark or Gothic enough with their work. I am the one where everyone wants to tear into because of the strict as hell guidelines, I am rigid like this because I want the best to come out of the magazine, I try to top each issue and having Ray Faraday Nelson in the 12th Issue and Rev. Steven Rage in Issue 13 -- I can only imagine what would come next with the magazine. I got a few submissions so far and that is the start. I encourage people to pass this page around for people to submit to the magazine.
I was toying with doing an anthology for the writers of AuthorsDen.com back in 2003 but not enough interest but doing an anthology so far where half the writers emerged from the Den this time around and got a few from the Den on the issue -- each writer came out very impressive. I published Pamela K. Kinney and her artist Susan L. Wickham on the 13th Issue -- the breakaway star from Issue 5, Andrew Boughton, did the lettering on the 13th Issue of the magazine, and Issue 14 will be home of House of Spiders 3 for it’s anniversary release. I will take guidelines for female models too for the magazine, because that is something I hope to do with some issues too -- models be between the ages of 28-40 years of age and have time be kind to them. What gets you made fun of with the magazine meaning -- I post your e-mail address up on the blog so I can point and laugh at you is if you send me a damn unicorn story or a clown story that isn’t Gothic or genre oriented. If you query about sending an erotica story and get the magazine’s name wrong -- that would get a rejection letter from hell.
I am an editor people will have fun working with if they get the right story to me, and if they are able to hang well with the rest of the line up because it is a tight-knit group. They’re treated like family and we’re in touch with each other on the holidays, sometimes a writer from a publication from way back gets back in touch in me over the years -- they do come back over the years while sometimes, they move on to bigger places. I got a guy from Issue 7 and he came back for Issue 11. He told me that I was his favorite editor to work with. Issue 7 broke in Grigori 3’s guitarist Ray R. Wise as a writer and we sealed the deal for him to premiere in the magazine when I did the first local issue. I do local issues every fourth odd number issue. Issue 15 might sound close this time around because I published 12 and 11 in reverse, I met the artists on Issue 11 and 13 on vampirefreaks.com.
The author Lloyd Phillip Campbell, is my in house nom de plume. If you see someone going on as him here, then I didn’t create the account -- I am going to explain how he came about, he came when someone pirated my memoir and wrote a story as him for the first time. I still write as him too, and people can’t tell what I do as him apart from what I do as my own name. There are a very rare occasions where the pen name’d story and the real name story will come in the same issue. Issue 10 will have this, Issue 11 will have this, and Issue 6 now has this because I conducted an interview in the issue. Interviews are conducted in house by me for the magazine and I do conduct the interview by e-mail where the questions are written up. They’re detailed too so if there is an author that I want to interview or a publisher, I will feature them in the magazine. Misty makes a guest appearance as a fictional contributor in the novel GAME OVER as a thank you for publishing my nonfiction story in Withersin Birth Issue, and a few of my contributors had followed with getting published there too.
So if you see a gay poet posing as him, that’s not him. You will know the ominous Lloyd Phillip Campbell by the use of old death penalties in modern times. A death by hanging brought back in the 1980s and make the person in prison watch her criminal daughter die as her neck snaps, that’s Lloyd. The magazine has that distinct charm to it and that is something I will not let anyone take a way from the magazine -- something that calls the mind the old school Weird Tales from the 1930s, and looking to do photography to capture the effect of the old Weird Tales covers. I will take period horror stories set in the 1980s-1990s, but with a little more depth to them. I don’t get enough horror set in the 1980s but I write in the 1990s myself and as Lloyd will set some stories in the 1980s.
Some writers in the magazine write as nom de plumes -- Christopher Allan Death is one of them, I liked the last name of this writer because it works with the magazine. He pronounces it as DEETH but I pronounce it as DEATH. The magazine has that Gothic attitude going for it, and living in the area where there are no nightclubs for Goths in the area -- this is the entertainment for them. Many writers in the business are quite aware of my rules, and understand why they’re in place. There are those out there who say I steal manuscripts, well I am going to clear the air here -- I ask for clearance to publish stories. Sometimes the clearance is hard to get because the writer haven’t been on a website in a long time.
Places like WritersCafe.org and FictionPress.com are basically ghost towns with as many people writing on the website -- I scout fan fiction.net from time to time too because I would encourage writers to write original material. So what I see with the trend and tides turning -- some want to get more erotic with horror in the small press, I don’t want to see it personally. I have a trained eye for this sort of thing so I know when to say no to a story. So as one looks at this submission call, and use it as a bit of a sit down for me to explain how I operate as a publisher -- some might get pissed because I don’t allow certain things and outright ban it from even getting in the pages of the magazine or the anthology.
