MOVE OVER, HARRY POTTER!
J.K Rowling, prepare to face a new challenger. Edmonton writer Kamilla Reid is setting a few fires in the children's fantasy adventure genre with her upcoming six-part book series "The Questory of Root Karbunkulus". Published by Book Surge, a group under the Amazon.com umbrella, "The Questory" celebrates its world premiere launch on Sunday at 11am at Century Dinner Theatre, 13103 Fort Road.
Like Harry Potter, Root Karbunkulus has a mysterious background and lives with a couple of quarreling aunts. But her world spins upside down when she is thrust into a magical journey of self-discovery. In DreAmm, 196 children have been invited to participate in a hunt for a magical treasure. But the chase is structured as a competition similar to TV's "Amazing Race", where teams are gradually eliminated in a face-off with the evil Kakos.
"It has all the classic elements", said Reid, best known throughout the region as musical director at the former Celebrations Dinner Theatre. "One of the hardest lessons they learn is to be true to themselves and not be worrying about others." In addition to writing the book, Reid orchestrated a video for a book website and asked Marcel Hamel to create the audio. The recording technologist, in addition to teaching music technology at MacEwan College, freelanced for several years shaping backing tracks at Celebrations. "She worked hard to create something unique and it's quite special. A big portion of her work was making sure the web page was unique," said the St. Albert resident.
Since the Harry Potter series, the fantasy adventure market for middle readers has grown exponentially and so has competition. But Hamel believes Reid's original ideas and marketing savvy will crack the market. "I've done lots of commercials, videos, backing tracks for competitions and documentaries. But this is really unique."

Kamilla Reid announced the official date of the World Premiere Launch of her book "The Questory of Root Karbunkulus. (middle reader/young adult fantasy adventure, currently available through Amazon) "I am thrilled to share this exciting event in my hometown of Edmonton at the theatre with which I have spent most of my artistic career." Reid enthused over her favorite chai latte. The exclusive event, which includes the official release of the book trailer and website along with other "cool" surprises, will take place at 11am on June 3rd, 2007 at Century Dinner Theatre (formerly Celebrations Dinner Theatre, 13103 Fort Road). Admission is free. However, seating is limited, so come early! If the book, which has already captured the hearts of those lucky enough to get sneak previews, is as great as they say, then it looks like Harry's got some company...
