The IPPY’s are hosted by Independent Publisher Magazine and were presented at their 12th Annual Banquet in Los Angeles on May 30th, coinciding with BookExpo.
The IPPY’s recognizes the best independently published books of the past year -- in 64 national categories, ten Outstanding Book of the Year categories, and 20 Best Regional Fiction and Non-Fiction categories.
Kitty Nirvana chronicles the adventures of two mismatched cats & their adopted family. The first collection gathers 170 of the Barry Corbett’s webcomic features into one 96 page volume.
When the Garrick family decided to adopt a pet, they chose a pair of very unusual cats. As different as night and day, these interesting and mysterious creatures would turn their lives inside out. Ginger and Shadow are your classic odd-couple pairing— two personalities that couldn’t be more opposed.
Barry has been publishing cartoons and comic strips for well over 10 years. In 2003 he published a Graphic Novel, Gormon: The Sentinel Awakes and followed that up in 2005 with his first paperback, Embrace the Pun ! Chock full of pun-based panel cartoons, it’s a tongue-in-cheek tribute to that ‘‘lowest form of humor’’ (according to humorist Oscar Levant).
Barry’s popular Webcomics Star Crossed and Rafferty can be found at corbettfeatures.com. His panel cartoons have regularly appeared in national publications such as American Legion Magazine, Lacrosse Magazine, The CityTown Extra, The Artist’s Magazine, True West Magazine, The Valley News, Bounce Magazine, Skipping Stones, The Chicago Loop News and FiftySomething Magazine.
Barry is joined at Corbett Features by fellow creator Brian Codagnone, who produces the Misfits and S1019 comic strips and also contributes a humor column. Corbett Features premiered on the internet in June of 2000 and has since drawn thousands of fans. The site updates daily and offers 6 different cartoon features.
“Highly recommended, especially as a giftbook for fellow feline fanciers.”

Kitty Nirvana: The First Ginger & Shadow Collection is a webcomic anthology following the (only slightly exaggerated) adventures of author’s two cats, who were adopted from an animal shelter when they were 6 week old kittens. Ginger is the queen of cool cats, self-assured, manipulative, suave, while Shadow is more nervous, soft-hearted, sentimental, and unusually pacifistic among carnivores. Their adventures with one another and their family are sure to strike a chord among cat lovers of all walks of life.
“I’m really getting fed up with this diet thing.”
“You’re just built for comfort, not speed.”
The charming black-and-white art captures the essence of cartoon felinity in this wonderfully entertaining collection.
