Speaking at an international seminar on Global warming held in Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai on 27th March, Dilip Dahanukar the author of book ‘eMaya” on how to halt Global warming, presented his findings to Dr. Michael Nobel, of the Nobel Prize Foundation of Sweden. Dahanukar stressed that the process of halting Global warming through reduction of greenhouse gases was extremely difficult and will take many decades to produce significant results. The world needed a quick solution. Dahanukar recalled that Nobel Prize winner Dr. Rajendra Pachauri as the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has determined the quantum of Global warming to be 1.6 watts per sq. meter which sums upto 0.8 Terawatts of heat energy. He stressed that the solution lies in increasing the reflection of Sun’s energy to halt Global warming. Out of the total Sun’s heat energy coming to Earth determined by NASA of 174 Terawatts, about 54 Terawatts i.e. 31% is reflected out due to the albedo effect of the clouds and the snow. Dahanukar suggested that we could use cloud making yachts designed by Prof. Stephen Salter of the Edinburgh University for the purpose of creating sunlight-reflecting clouds. These clouds have a high albedo effect and can effectively increase the reflection of Sun’s energy. The yachts are unmanned, wind-driven, self-energized and radio controlled. Less than a 1500 of these floating sea yachts would increase the albedo by 0.8 TW which effectively and completely halt global warming in just 2 to 3 years! The halting of Global warming will stabilize the World Climate, and thereby increase food security.
Dahanukar pointed out that the World population has grown from 2.6 billion in 1950 to nearly 7 billion in 2010. It is increasing at an alarming rate of 80 million per year and is expected to reach a figure of 14 billion in 2100. Such a massive increase in number of people had put an enormous pressure on the water and land resources of the planet to produce food to feed the people. We need a new kind of Second Green Revolution to double the production of food. We all know that food is created in the leaves with sunlight, water and carbon dioxide. Sunlight converts carbon dioxide into starch and releases oxygen. Research has found that increase of carbon dioxide availability in the air surrounding the leaves boosts photosynthesis and increases the yield multifold!
Thermal power plants all over the World are burning a huge quantity fossil fuel and releasing carbon dioxide in the air in their hot flue gas through high chimneys. This flue gas contains 12% carbon dioxide or 120,000 ppm. The carbon dioxide present in the air is only about 380 ppm. Research has shown that enriching the air to 600 ppm of carbon dioxide can increase the yield by 40% to 100%. Dahanukar suggested that the flue gas should be piped into the fields, orchards, and plantations. It will do wonders to increase the yield of food. The productive use of carbon dioxide would form the genesis of the Second Green Revolution. Dahanukar hoped that concerned companies and research agencies will start the work to develop and commercialize the idea of using wasted carbon dioxide for productive use. It may take 20 to 30 years to spread the pipeline network on the farms in a large way, but the World will desperately need it at that time to meet the food demand of the increased population.
