Snowy Pea and the Ghost Crab, is a 8 1/2 x 11, hard cover, 64 page, 13 chapter, fully illustrated in watercolor, fictional children's storybook for grades 2-5. The story takes place on a beach on Sanibel Island, in southwest Florida. The book begins with a Cast of Characters wih real-life descriptions of the 14 shorebirds and a ghost crab.. As an endangered species, Snowy Pea (a snowy plover shorebird) has never been able to hatch her eggs due to predation or destruction. After losing her mate to a hawk, she flies to a new beach location and lays her eggs. Four resident birds, Paulie Pelican, Edna Egret, Oscar Osprey, and Crazy Crow, watch as a raccoon threatens the nest. They decide to intercede and scare the raccoon away. Feeling sorry for tiny Snowy Pea, the birds decide to form the Snowy Pea Protection Plan and gather eight more shorebirds who will take turns guarding the nest until the eggs hatch. A maverick ghost crab, Ghosty Ghost Crab, joins in as a guard. Over the next 24 days, the nest is threatened by a dog, ghost crabs, a raccoon, a snake, a herring gull, and children. One egg is tragically eaten by the manipulative Harry Herring Gull. After several more attacks were successfully prevented, two chicks finally hatched. Snowy Pea’s dream had come true with adorable chicks, Sweet Pea and Pepper Pea. Ghosty Ghost Crab is declared the smallest and most courageous of the guards. He is given a medal of heroism —a gold bracelet with a #1 charm attached that Crazy Crow had found in the sand.
