My book, "WHAT HOPE HAVE YOU!" is the story of three women and their families. A black woman, a woman of mixed race and a white women. It tells how closely the families lived together but in fact, so far apart, because of Apartheid. It relates the hardships and break-up of the families of the woman of mixed blood and the black woman, due to the strict segregation laws of the Apartheid Government. In spite of which, they always expressed joy. The story of the white woman was, in part, my own family story. We emigrated to Canada in the 1970's because there seemed no hope of change at that time
I, together with another former South African, Heather Ferris, co-founded Southern Africa Women's Hope, Education and Training to help women who suffered due to Apartheid, through being denied education, causing poverty, leading to crime, as well as the break-up of their families, through strict racial segregation laws which caused the HIV/AIDS pandemic, together with the policy of bringing in migrant workers from Central Africa to flood the labor market and keep wages low. It is now known that HIV/AIDS originated in Central Africa. The Mission of this Organisation is to empower women in Southern Africa, who have been affected by HIV/AIDS, poverty and violence, to build strong, healthy families and communities through education and training, to become teachers, care-workers etc. or to start their own small businesses. Care and counseling is also provided for orphans and those who suffer from HIV/AIDS as well as for victims of torture in Zimbabwe.
Heather, the co-founder of W.H.E.A.T. has written a book, helping families who have suffered loss through HIV/AIDS, deal with grief. It is entitled "Someone I love, died."
In the late 1960's it was the young generation of black people who began protesting their inferior education, similar to the actions of the young people in the Middle East at this time. This brought the attention of the world to the conditions in South Africa and, because of the sanctions imposed, the Apartheid Government finally realised they had no option, but to change. In 1993 all the people voted at the General Election. With new opportunities through education and increased earning power the situation is improving. Affordable medication for HIV/AIDS is also available. However, with so many to be educated and so many orphans to care for, funds are still needed. Nelson Mandela and Bishop Tutu's demonstration of forgiveness with their policy of "Truth and Reconciliation" saved much bloodshed during this turbulent time.
Apartheid is now history and it is important to forgive but it is equally important not to forget
To quote George Santayana: "Those who do not remember the past, are condemned to repeat it."
