| Autobiography of Poet, Dr. Robin C. Rice. |
I am Dr. Robin C. Rice, a native Ohio resident transported to Pittsburgh, PA. I am currently the mother of 3 children, Heavan, Zyon, and Myracle, all of whom are Radical Learners. I am passionate about Love, Light, Peace and Joy. I dedicate a great deal of my time to children and advocating on their behalf. I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University, as well as a B.A. in accounting from Baldwin Wallace College. Currently, I am a doctoral candidate working on my dissertation in curriculum and instruction at Kent State University, while specializing in international/multicultural education. I have taught in both urban and suburban school settings. I am a certified teacher, a state endorsed reading specialist and have worked as a mentor to pre-service student teachers in the field of education. As a result of deep soul searching, I left the public school system to pursue a vision of designing, co-constructing and opening a holistic student centered community school. As a result, A World of Learning originated. I began this project with a vision of saving “children” and providing a safe and nurturing haven where learning could be enjoyed and celebrated as it was meant to be. I always remember having a passion for education, for example my favorite game as a child was school where I got to be the teacher. Thus, I thought I had found my niche once I became a certified schoolteacher and secured my first teaching assignment. I was enamored with my students and the learning process. However, my enthusiasm quickly dissipated when the reality of “schooling” was revealed. I no longer felt joy, but heartache at the systemic annihilation of our children. However, one thing inspired me to keep coming to teach, day after day, despite the school’s limited supplies, lack of safety, and irreverence for aesthetics; it was the will and determination of my students. They came to school day after day, excited to just learn and receive reassurance that education is liberating and knowledge is power. It was with these students in mind, along with my own children and my childhood experiences that the desire to transmute the system of education and learning across the US was fueled. After much soul searching, I made the decision to leave the school system and do something new. This is where my journey into free schooling began and has culminated into our Radical Learning lifestyle. The path of free learning has led to a rebirth of peaceful loving joyful fun in A World of Learning. These are the motivators that keep me pursuing this dream, despite obstacles that at times can seem insurmountable. I feel it is my duty to press on as each student presses on toward the hope of creating a better world for all of us and the use of poetry presses us all onward and upward.
