A Map of the City

I stand upon a hill and see
A luminous country under me,
Through which at two the drunk sailor must weave;
The transient's pause, the sailor's leave.

I notice, looking down the hill,
Arms braced upon a window sill;
And on the web of fire escapes
Move the potential, the grey shapes.

I hold the city here, complete;
And every shape defined by light
Is mine, or corresponds to mine,
Some flickering or some steady shine.

This map is ground of my delight.
Between the limits, night by night,
I watch a malady's advance,
I recognize my love of chance.

By the recurrent lights I see

It's dawn,-
open the door,

The jasmine flowers
from their vines
are calling you to come running,

Uncle Sun
is crawling out
all dressed in a crimson shirt,
listen -- the gatekeeper
is singing
his song, "Rama hoi."
The birds
are leaving their nests
to fly in the sky,
listen to them
singing continuously,
filling the morning air!
The restless
Bulbul birds
whistle from flower to flower,
this time,

Khukumoni will open her eyes!
Setting the rudder,
hoisting the sail,
the boat begins its journey,
this time,

Khukumoni has opened her eyes!
Lazy
she's not--
she's an early-riser,
that's why
Brother Moon
gives a teep everyday for her!
Up

all the little boys and girls,

     In the Process of Revision

Sometimes a poem mutters under
its breath, talks to itself, ponders
your choices, recommends changes
you aren't ready for, rearranges
your lines, reads along with your words,
suggests sotto voce (show-off) stronger verbs,
then grabs a pen and elbows in,
laughs at your lack of Greek and Latin,
astronomy, Renaissance art, astrology,
metaphysics, mythology,
scribbles down its own words, shouts,
crosses yours out, then sits and pouts,
peeks over the edge of the page,
reads what you wrote. Drives off in a rage.
Then calls you up from around the corner,
wants to know what you're planning for dinner.
