March is ‘Women’s History Month’

In 1978, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women in California, began a "Women's History Week" celebration. The week was chosen to coincide with International Women's Day, which was first celebrated March 8, 1911, in Europe.

Three years later, the United States Congress passed a resolution establishing National Women's History Week, which was expanded to a month in 1987 at the request of the National Women's History Project . Every year since then the U.S. Congress has issued a resolution for Women's History Month.

WE HONOR THE FOLLOWING DYNAMIC WOMEN, WHO ARE REAL-LIFE
“Super Sistahs”---

Corretta Scott King--- activist, organizer, wife of slain Civil Rights Leader Dr. M.L. King, Jr. She passed on to the next world during Black History Month 2006.

Rosa Parks--- ‘Mother of Civil Rights Movement”--- refused to give up her seat on segregated bus.


Patricia Roberts Harris --- dedicated to public service, civil rights and the promotion of social justice. he was appointed co-chair of the National Women’s Committee for Civil Rights by President John F. Kennedy. In 1980, Harris was appointed Secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.


Fannie Lou Hamer --a Mississippi sharecropper, changed a nation's perspective on democracy.
…worked with the National Council of Negro Women


Dorothy Height --- President of National Council of Negro Women--- her lifetime of achievement measures the liberation of Black America, the advance of women's rights and a determined effort to lift the poor and the powerless.


Barbara Jordan-- Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas in 1972, Barbara Jordan became the first African-American congresswoman to be elected, and re-elected, from the deep South.


Bessie Coleman ---The world’s first African American woman aviator, earned her pilot’s license in 1921 in France.


Shirley Chisholm--the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Congress


Harriet Tubman --- leader of escaped slaves via the “underground railroad.” Tubman returned time after time to her native Maryland, bringing out her relatives and as many as 300 other slaves.


Sojourner Truth --- powerful speaker for the antislavery movement.


Wilma Rudolph--The first American woman ever to win three gold medals in the Olympics, 1960.


Madam C.J. Walker - Sarah Breedlove - was a highly successful entrepreneur, widely considered to be the first African-American woman millionaires.

Susan B. Anthony --- champion of suffrage, abolition, temperance and equal rights. The 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote was credited to her efforts.

Ida B. Wells -- Born of slaves, Ida B. Wells-Barnett fought to stop the lynching of Black Americans, carrying her fight to the White House.


Sojourner Truth --- she lent her powerful talents as a speaker to the antislavery movement.

Wilma Rudolph--The first American woman ever to win three gold medals in the Olympics, 1960.


Sacagawea ---famed Native American woman whose land survival expertise and interpretive abilities were essential to the success of the Lewis and Clark Expedition

Jane Swisshelm, editor and publisher, women’s rights activist--feminist, abolitionist, of the founders of the Minnesota Republican Party.


Mary Walker, M.D.,--- physician and Civil War field surgeon, was the first woman to receive the Medal of Honor. Much ahead of her time, Dr. Walker, in 1855, was one of the first women in the United States to earn a medical degree.

Dorothy Day ---a radical Catholic social change activist who was arrested demonstrating for women’s suffrage in 1917. She helped start services for the poor.

Gloria Steinhem--- founded Ms. Magazine….a feminist magazine founded in 1972.
