GARY R. VARNER’S AUTHORSDEN NEWSLETTER
December 2005

Greetings and welcome to the new subscribers to this rather infrequent newsletter. It’s difficult to believe that another new year is upon us. Let us hope that 2006 will bring an end to the hostilities in the world, corporate corruption, environmental degradation, genocide, starvation and all of the associated ills that are so prevalent in our world today. While it is doubtful that any of these wishes will be granted all victories, no matter how small, advance the prospects of humanity. For those of you who may not have heard of some very good and free ways to help our fellow humans (and animals) in need I suggest that you go to The Hunger Site at www.thehungersite.com. With the click of your mouse you can provide food and shelter for dogs and cats in need, help improve literacy, provide free mammograms, free shots and medical care for the world’s poor children, provide meals to the world’s hungry, and buy up rainforest property before it is destroyed by loggers and cattle barons.

Another excellent internet site is the Natural Resources Defense Council at www.savebiogems.org. Here you can send email letters to political and corporate leaders to help save some of the worlds most endangered natural areas. I have been a member for sometime and they have an excellent success rate.

And, finally, I would recommend the Amnesty International site at www.amnestyusa.org. Do yourselves a favor and visit this site to protect not only your own human rights but those of persecuted people around the world. The only way to stop torture, genocide, unjust imprisonment and other horrific human rights violations is to take individual action. This is one way to do so.

This last year has been a busy one for me. My forth book on folklore, The Mythic Forest, the Green Man and the Spirit of Nature will be released in the spring as part of Algora Publishing’s spring/summer offering. In addition I am finishing up another book I have titled Creatures in the Mist: The Little People, Wild Men and Spirit Beings Around the World. More information on both of these projects will be forthcoming. I am happy to report that over 160 university and academic libraries around the world have purchased Menhirs, Dolmen and Circles of Stone, from the Hong Kong Baptist University to the University of Vermont, Loyola Marymount University, Florida A&M and Vanderbilt University Libraries.

I suppose that most people who profess to be writers are faced with this but I have recently become aware that many of my articles that I have posted on AuthorsDen have been “borrowed” by other sites—usually in their entirety. I have received a few requests to republish certain articles by individuals either for their own web sites or for school projects but for the most part my articles are simply acquisitioned. The following sites have used my work without first requesting permission. I actually find it flattering that my articles are regarded as worthy enough to benefit other sites but I also find it humorous as to how they are sometimes used.

Using a header reading “News of the best of times and the worst of times—Living in Paradox”, my article “Healing the Earth” is a front page offering on the SynEARTH.network (http://www.synearth.net/2005/11/07.html) as well as on their alternate site http://futurepositive.synearth.net/2005/11/07?print-friendly=true.

My article “Magical Stones and Charms” appears on a site devoted to “southern charms”, http://southerncharms.ficosouthern.com/southerncharmsfeaturedcharms/, and my article on “Sacred Groves” appears on the “Forest of Memories: Resources and Information Supporting Green Burials” site, http://www.forestofmemories.org/research/.

My writing on religion having to do with Pagan ethics and Yule celebrations have appeared on http://www.sic16.info/casting-spell.html and http://religiousconsultants.com/god/yule.htm. What I find most entertaining is that my article on holy wells called “Sacred Water: Faeries, Healing, Warts and Dreams” appears on a site devoted to natural healing remedies for warts http://www.naturaltreatmenthelp.com/aboutwarts43.html. However, there are pluses as well. My AuthorsDen site is listed as one of a very few resources on contemporary mythology on Fact Library’s site http://www.fact-library.com/

And I find that it isn’t just my articles that are borrowed. A photo I took of the Maidu sacred Panther Meadows site in Northern California has appeared on a site devoted to vortexes,
http://www.angelfire.com/indie/anna_jones1/vortexes.html.

I really don’t mind that people want to use my work on their sites, for the most part they do give me credit and I write so that people will read what I have to say. But gee, it would be nice if they asked me!

By the way I will be a guest on the What A World Radio show hosted by Nevyn Campanella, PhD on Sunday, January 8th at 9pm pacific and 11pm central time. This is a podcast show so if you would like to join in you will need to go to http://www.whataworldradio.com/.

I wish you all a very safe and happy holiday and hope you will visit my website at www.authorsden.com/garyrvarner. I have several draft chapters of my book in progress posted for your enjoyment.
