Subject: Gary R. Varner's Authorsden Newsletter - December 2006

I would like to wish all of my subscribers a very nice and peaceful holiday season! I am also writing to give you the latest information concerning my writing. For several years I have worked with and been published by “traditional” publishers, Algora Publishing has previously released Menhirs, Dolmen and Circles of Stone and The Mythic Forest, the Green Man and the Spirit of Nature. Algora will also be releasing another book in the spring called Creatures in the Mist. However, I have had a desire for sometime to design and publish my own work and have had the opportunity to do so through Lulu Press. My first effort in this is my most recent book, Strangely Wrought Creatures of Life & Death. This is a study of those strange and mythical figures we so often see in our architecture around the world. Green Men, gargoyles and grotesques and those unusual symbols that are carved on old headstones in our cemeteries. I believe you will find this an interesting work dealing with the history and meaning of these objects. I have included over 50 photographs taken in the US, Britain and France illustrating the various types created over the years. Please check it out with the following link: It is available in both trade paper and e-book formats.

I am also writing another book on folklore and ancient traditions called The Dark Wind: Witches and the Concept of Evil. This is a historical and ethnographic study of the witch and examines the universal aspects of this individual throughout history. The differences between the shaman and the witch are explored as well as the use of magic, incantations, and spells. Also examined are the various laws dating back to Mesopotamia and Rome, the witch trials and killings of the Middle Ages and in contemporary times, and how Christianity itself has contributed to the perpetuation of the concept of the witch. When its completed I believe you will find this work also of interest. I will let you know when it will be available. Currently I am unsure if I will produce this one through Lulu Press or if it will be submitted to another publisher.

I invite your comments and questions. Please write to me at and please visit my AuthorsDen site when you can at
