Subject: Folklore and Mythology News Letter of Gary R. Varner

Two - thousand nine looks like it will be another busy year. My 2002 book, Sacred Wells, has just been released in a second edition by Algora Publishing with new photos and text. Currently it is available on and Barnes & but soon will be found on the many other retail sites on the web and can be ordered through your local bookshop. My latest book, The Owens Valley Paiute – A Cultural History will also be available soon. This book, illustrated with 28 pages of photographs, is a history of the Paiute people who have lived in the arid Great Basin for the last five to eight thousand years and examines their culture, technology, rock art, folklore and mythology and their very important role in the Ghost Dance religion which ultimately resulted in the defeat of the powerful Sioux at Wounded Knee.

In July, I was interviewed on Australia’s #1 alternative radio show, The Underworld Show with Lisa Ramses. We talked about the Green Man, gargoyles, dragons and mystical beasts. For those of you who would like to hear the interview just follow the following link: Next month I will be on a vacation to Nova Scotia and hope to explore some of the many folktales and mysteries that originate in that part of the world.

If you haven’t visited for a while please stop in at my Authors Den site and look at some of my new offerings. You can get there by pasting the following link on your internet address bar: You are also invited to drop me a line at to discuss any of my work or suggest a topic for future research.

Take care,
