Note from Carolyn
Dear Subscribers:
I think I’m ready for another rant. If one will save you from a scam, though, won’t it be worth it? The scam is the renewal of an old one. Many of those who offer writer services are still trying to coax writers into spending the money they’ve set aside for book promotion to get that one in a million chance to be on Oprah. Still!!
The odds are not crapshoot odds. They are lottery odds.
Here's my story, one from my early days as a novelist. Let's call it my naive period. A friend of mine had a friend who lived across the street from Oprah's cousin (or aunt, or best friend - - can't quite remember). Anyway, Oprah spends every Thanksgiving with her. So my friend sweetly offered to take my book (packaged - - with a professional media kit and a cover letter that included a nice pitch on the benefits of my tolerance - related book and how it fit with Oprah's mission!)to them on Thanksgiving day. I never heard a word. In fact, the most it did for me is give me visions of everyone sitting around the dining room table laughing at the chutzpa (and stupidity!) of we “little” authors.
Then later another woman - - a newly - minted fantasy author - - got the idea of following one of the many Oprah - success plans to the letter but with a packet from several of the best - known authors she knew. She cleverly made us into a panel discussing alternative publishing (back when that was news). Our e - mails between each other went on endlessly and she was always positive, always sure that her next follow - up plan would work. Still, nada. And, by the way, her presentations were meticulous and the credentials of the authors she chose quite stellar. They also all fit into what might be considered Oprah's mission for good reading and reading that opens the minds of women to possibilities for women of all races. The only thing some didn't have was prestigious publishers.
To continue the saga, another friend had success - - of a sort!
Her book was a nonfiction book on finance about working from home. She was chosen for a panel/group segment on Oprah. Just before that she had been featured on the cover (!) of Money magazine working from her bubble bath tub, phone and computer nearby. Now that's a pretty stupendous platform even though her book, too, was self published. Here's what she said, as nearly as I can remember it: "I think I sold ten books and the new edition I printed for the occasion is still sitting in my garage - - a couple thousand of them! With nowhere to go."
That's when I decided that if an author is determined to use his or her promotion time seeking the big splash instead of working hard, one step at a time - - which eventually assures success (assuming they have a great product, of course!) - - I won't take them on as clients.
Nope. They can use one of those others who plaster enticing Oprah - titled articles around the Web because they know they'll get lots of readership! And lots of paying clients. I'd rather be there to show them how to build a career, because I see most of those who appear to be "instant successes" aren’t. “Instant” successes are just writers who have taken the time to first learn their craft, and then used the elbow grease necessary to get their books read. Usually without Oprah.
Happy writing, editing and promoting to you,
Carolyn Howard - Johnson

Letters to the Editor ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Hi Carolyn,
I'm on Chapter one of Frugal and Focused Tweeting and I just came across problem that causes headaches for too many authors. In the resource link you give for Tony Eldridge’s video (page 27), the sentence period is at the end of the link. I know from personal experience that many people who aren't that link savvy assume that the period that comes after the html is part of the link and when they use it and find the link doesn’t work, can't figure out what is wrong.
I solve this two ways: If rearrange a sentence so the link isn't at the end of the sentence. Otherwise I leave the period off the sentence. That way the link is correct, and it doesn't look funny because the sentence ends with a long link.) Or you can shorten the URL for the link using budurl.com or bit.ly.
Just wanted to share that.

Dear Carolyn:
I do reviews for just about anyone and just about any type of book. There have been only two books that I've declined. I post everything on my site A Book and A Dish. And I post on many membership networks. If you have friends who need reviews, send them my way, especially if they can send a pdf file. Now, I'm going to reread your book [Frugal and Focused Tweeting for Retailers] very slowly and start putting it to use.

Authors Den Launches New Benefit ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I have been a member of Authors Den (AD) for about eight or nine years. At first I just loved their free (very frugal!) way for a new author to have a Web site. Then I started using their Gold membership to publish my newsletter.
I'm not much of a date keeper but that newsletter (It goes by the same name as this blog - - branding you know!) has been around for some years now! I've even partnered with Authors Den at the LA Times/UCLA Writers' Fair. Cross promotion always has its advantages, but it is an especially good marketing tool when one partners with those who already have lots of contacts and a great reputation.
The point of all this is that AD has some news. And I sure love spreading good news - - especially when it comes from people I feel great about recommending. My AD friend Matt Miller writes:
"The AuthorsDen Services Marketplace is Open for Business!
"AuthorsDen.com, an online literary community established in 2000, has seen the toll researching the diverse components of the book industry has taken on writers. As a result, we recently launched the AuthorsDen Community MarketPlace...
"The MarketPlace brings together authors and community service providers to create a more artful product. It looks as if it will save us authors some promotion time. Find it at
http://marketplace.authorsden.com">http://marketplace.authorsden.com">http://marketplace.authorsden.com .”
I can hardly wait to try all its features. Check it out for yourself. And while you're poking around, look at the different membership levels. At a bare minimum sigh up for the free level. Even if you have a Web site of your own, all those outside links coming back to your Web site make for very good Web site optimization (SEO). It is also great backup when your server gives you fits. And, think of the networking opportunities among your fellow AD authors!

Managing Your Own Website by Phyllis Zimbler Miller
Thanks to the software of WordPress.org (known as WordPress and not the same as WordPress.com) you can now have a website that, once up, you can manage all by yourself with the same ease as using Word. (This means that you do not have to wait for - - or pay - - your web person simply to add, for example, a new book signing.)
This isn’t to say there isn’t a learning curve as there was with Word, because there is. And for this reason my company Miller Mosaic Power Marketing has created brief how - to videos for WordPress websites - - access to which is being provided by WordPress website builder Doron Orenstein to help his clients quickly master the learning curve for WordPress websites.
FYI – Most people need a WordPress expert to build the site - - and all WordPress sites are NOT created equal. It’s important to have your WordPress site built by someone who understands search engine optimization (so the search engines can find your site), keywords, and other important back - end functions.
Learn about Doron’s WordPress websites and watch an example of one of our how - to videos (scroll down the right - hand side) at http://www.magneticwebworks.com/services/ultra - pro - websites/
Please note that Doron is making a donation to Kiva.org for every WordPress website he builds. You can get a website that you can manage yourself and at the same time do a good deed!

UCLA Speech Instructor Shares Power Point Tips ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Overcoming Death by PowerPoint
By Pam Kelly
What is the number one PowerPoint sin? The unanimous response I hear is - reading the slides! Reading PowerPoint, like hiding behind the lectern, feels safer than standing out there naked and in the spotlight. This must be why so many speakers and organizations do it!
To free ourselves from the spell, we have to (1) Intervene and establish our intention to take control, then (2) Practice explaining the ideas behind the slides until our “story - line” flows easily and (3) Rehearse staying connected to our listeners.
Here are some tips to shift your focus from reading slides to connecting with your audience:
ROLE - PLAY: Act AS IF you are…
• The Leader, in charge of the PowerPoint; it’s there to support and follow you – not the other way around.
• A Story Teller - illuminate your PowerPoint bullets with colorful pictures and flesh them out with stories, humor, anecdotes and your personality
• A Dance Partner - connect from moment to moment with your audience, through your whole self, including eye contact, facial expression, body language, voice tone and tempo, inner commitment and conviction.
STRUCTURE: Build a solid container for your ideas with…
• “Books Ends” - Present a big picture idea at the beginning and at the end, such as “Breathe Life into Your Project Reviews!”; then have everything in between support that big picture idea. “Main Ideas and Transitions”
• Think of each slide as a bead on a necklace. What is the most important idea about each slide and what is the idea that connects one slide with the next? Speak to these. The string that ties your beads together is your big picture idea.
• If you want to speak to several bullets on a slide, then instead of just reading bullets (Zzzzz), 1) Introduce the framing point that the bullets relate to (e.g. “So what are the 4 languages of public speaking?”), then 2) Tie the bullets together with simple word cues: “First, we have the verbal, Next, is the visual, Then, there’s the vocal, and Finally, we come to the visceral!” And 3) Conclude or transition – (Conclusion) “And here we have the 4 languages of public speaking!” (Add transition) “Now let’s move on! Let’s get you on your feet using those 4 languages!”
PRACTICE: Rehearse on your feet, out loud and...
• Drill your Intro and Conclusion (bookends) over and over, to make them attention - getting, confident, clear, concise and memorable.
• Rehearse your slides to iron out the frames, word cues, summaries, transitions and get comfortable with your story line.
• Run through the entire presentation several times, from beginning to end, locking in your flow and timing.
• Now be ten times louder and more excited – to unleash all your energy and self - expression (this is a rehearsal technique only).
• Finally, let it all go and be yourself, but on purpose.
At this point, not only will you have avoided death by PowerPoint, you will be a force of nature!

An Itty - Bitty Column on Writing
Writing the Arts
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ By Mindy Phillips Lawrence
In 1985, I took a feature writing class in St. Louis, Missouri taught by a copyeditor at the Post - Dispatch. She asked what type writing I’d like to do and I said, “I’d like to do articles on the arts.” I never did but wound up writing on many other topics.
I left artwork years ago but, for some reason, have taken it up again. When I was working on my college degree in art, I painted and did some etching work. Now I do calligraphy, handmade bookbinding and a modern version of illuminated manuscripts. Soon I will add other work as well. The interesting thing about returning to art is I see what I couldn’t see when I was younger: how dedicated someone has to be to produce excellent work.
If you decide to write for the arts, you need to do your research to do it well. Know your periods, your genres, your artists and your materials. Googling helps tremendously.
When you write the arts, you’ll find a great deal of variety in writing topics. There is studio art, photography, woodworking, glass blowing and architecture – not to mention art therapy. Pick your niche and get started.

Tip: Aggie Villaneuva of Visual Arts Junction and book launch organizer shares this idea for using Twitter with you: There are numerous free apps to help analyze how effective you are with your twitter marketing. I used many of them until I found Twitalyzer, which does about everything you could ask. But it's not just a numbers cruncher. Learn more at: http://www.visualartsjunction.com/? p=9872

Visit one of my blogs. Experiment a bit with the little green Tweetmeme logo if you haven't used one before. And, please let me know if mine is working for you. I think the one at www.thefrugaleditor.blogspot.com is working. I used the second offering down on the tweetmeme site and replaced the suggested code with the address of my blog. =====================================================

Aggie Villaneuva Offers Advanced Twitter Advice

Let’s convert our Twitter followers into faithful followers. Here’s the way I did it with statistics to back up its success ratio:
It's so easy to click that Unfollow or Unfriend button. We work hard to connect with our niche on social media, so once we gain them how do we turn those followers into faithful followers who stay, and hopefully buy at some point.
I can tell you in one sentence. "Give them posts that are so great they will want to retweet them."
We must give them far more than mini - ads to buy our books or for that matter, talk only about our kids and diets. In fact, we'll lose them all if that's the extent of our posts. Give your followers valuable information. Never forget, no matter which byway we travel down, this is the information highway.
People in every niche want to learn/benefit from their time spent in social media sites. Give them tips in your specialty, and not just from you. Every time you come across what interests you, share it.
It's wonderful to hit that Retweet button on posts that grab you, but I go further for the sake of my followers. I add a link and post about them to my ever - growing list of recurring and revolving posts. And I use the pro level of SocialOomph.com to make that list (read that former Tweets) work for me. If you Retweet valuable information only once, most of your followers will miss it in that never - ending social stream.
I have literally books worth of information set up to disperse several times a day to all my social media, including twitter, Facebook, Facebook Pages, LinkedIn,Identi.ca, Plaxo Pulse and all my other 20 social media sites. ( See the basic Social Oomph information on my site at http://www.visualartsjunction.com/?p=9162 This is a necessity if you're serious about creating faithful followers.)
My recurring tweets compile categories that each contain tips and how - tos, contest info, quotes, videos, and everything I come across of help/interest to writers and photographers. Part of my daily online work regime involves adding to these dozens of reservoirs. This happens naturally as I find gems on the web for myself.
This converts followers into faithful followers. And they will let you know if you are succeeding in putting them first in your posts, either negatively or positively. Ricky Russo http://www.facebook.com/rickyrusso602? wrote me the kindest letter at Facebook:
“I just wanted to thank you. Your postings have educated me in such a great way. Your posts are always the first that I open, and I love that you care about others sooo much that you share all of the knowledge with the public! Thank You SOOOOO much Aggie! I will always be a follower of you! :)”
And Greg Seeley at Book Marketing Powerhouse http://bookmarketing.ning.com/profile/GreggSeeley?xg_source=profiles_friendList sent me a question with this comment included:
“Hi Aggie, I am enjoying your posts. I wish you great success! I have been following your work and have made great contacts as a result! Well done!”
Our social media friends will be forever grateful if we have helped them in their careers and interests. And success shows by the numbers. I use Retweet Rank,http://www.retweetrank.com/ a free stats program, to track my numbers, and they teeter between over 98th percentile to over 99th percentile.
Insider Page, LBC - Marketing, at Twitter has fewer people retweeting them than I do, though they have over 75,000 more followers than me. I checked the retweet percentile of Sean D'Souza, founder of wildly popular PsychoTactics™, a thought system based on 5000+ years of tried and tested methods applied to marketing.http://www.psychotactics.com/ My retweet percentile is higher than his.
And yours will be too if you remember to put your friends and followers first. Make sure the majority of your posts directly benefit them, and in the long run it will directly benefit you.
Please be advised that I so highly recommend the program that I have become an affiliate, but this is by no means the reason for this post. If you upgrade through my link, be sure you become an affiliate yourself to earn some spending cash. Here my affiliate link: http://www.socialoomph.com/91860.html
