*** From The Author*s Desk ***
Only one plug from me this issue. It is last call for registering for my e-class. Publish That Book begins September 7, 2009. (Although it is a holiday, nothing is required of the student on that day.) I know the economy is bad, but books are selling.
WOW! Women on Writing presents:
PUBLISH THAT BOOK: How to Write a Nonfiction Book Proposal That Sells
This from previous students:
I really enjoyed the class and the discipline it required. I work much better under pressure and that pressure was two-fold: time and quality. Your encouragement and the input from the others helped me to see my project with new, fresh eyes. I’d been working on this rewrite for so long I had become stymied. —Winnie
I LOVED the assignments. You forced me to re-do things I thought I had already done and re-think things I had already spent a lot of time on. And I ended up with a clearer picture of what I'm doing and where I need to go. I even found the journaling helpful—not normally my favorite thing. —Pamela
Start date: September 7, 2009

*** Fern Reiss Opinions ***
Q.: Fern, you have been in the business of expertizing for quite a while. What would you advise writers who are looking to get published today in this difficult climate?
A.: The publishing world is in the worst quagmire it's ever experienced. But books are still being published, so writers shouldn't give up hope! The best advice I can give to writers who are seeking publication is, be sure you have a solid platform before you start the process, and be sure you've planned your publicity. Publishers today are *not* publicizing books, and bookstore shelf life is a paltry four months—so if you don't have a publicity plan for your book, it's not going to get any attention. It's a shame to go through all the work of writing a book without making plans for its publicity after it's published.
Q.: Another economic-related question if you don't mind: what are some things that writers can do to keep the income coming in between books or while waiting for new business?
A.: The trick is always to have some kind of passive income that's producing money even while you're between projects. Write up a series of special reports on your topic, and sell them for a few dollars each from your website. Offer consulting in your area of expertise. Put together an online class on your topic that works via autoresponders, so that you can develop the content once, and sell it whenever someone wants to buy. Writers have always sold their expertise in the form of books, but you can also put your expertise into other written forms, and use those sales to weather the gap between booksales.
Fern Reiss runs the Expertizing Publicity Forum (http://www.Expertizing.com/forum.htm) where authors and businesses pitch top journalists each week via email, and directs the International Association of Writers (http://www.AssociationofWriters.com) offering publicity vehicles to writers (speakers' bureau, journalist database, literary agent forum, syndicated article directory) for $149/year.

*** Best Info This Month ***
Here are a couple of the best ideas I’ve read this month:
• ...whip up a one-pager, an easy form that summarizes your platform… A one-pager lists and illustrates in two columns your publication credits, media experience, speaking credentials, professional affiliations, online readership, notable education and awards won. Carry it to conferences and literary events. Any time you’re pitching a book, you’ll want to include your one-pager to make a bigger impact and demonstrate your marketing savvy.
• MYTH 3
IF YOUR BOOK HAS BEEN ACCEPTED BY A MAJOR PUBLISHER, IT MUST BE PERFECT JUST THE WAY IT IS. From the 7 Biggest Myths of Publishing (Know the Truth) by Elizabeth Sims on the Writer’s Digest site.
• WordHustler is the world's first online submission management platform for writers. John Singleton and Anne Walls are two writers who grew tired of the traditional method of submitting work to publications, literary agents, publishers, writing competitions and more, so they invented a way to do it better and more cost-effectively. Simply upload your manuscripts to your free WordHustler account, research and select markets from the free database of 4,500 agents, publishers, contests, and publications, then WordHustler takes care of all the physical printing and shipping of manuscripts for you.
WordHustler offers sophisticated manuscript tracking, cover letter clinics, and helpful interviews with agents and editors on their blog, WordHustlerInk. WordHustler also solves the hassles related to International Shipping and postage, which is why 5,000 writers from all over the world have already used them to send out over 30 million words.
The best part is that using WordHustler saves you time so you can do what you're supposed to be doing: WRITING. WordHustler's goal is to make the submission process more organized for writers AND the markets who receive their work. In fact, Bnet.com called them “The Match.com for the publishing industry.” Try them today!
