Hello, do you love books? Want to read about your favorites?

It's Only Ink! Children's Book Review Newsletter is for children's book reviews. My name is Jennifer LB Leese. I am an author of children's picture books, young adult gothic, fantasy novels, and paranormal romance novels. I am also a children's book reviewer, copyeditor, freelance writer, and feature article writer and managing editor for the local Picket News. As a book reviewer, I have many authors, publishers, and publicists sending me tons of books for review. Because of this, I tend to get overloaded and have no where to send the reviews. So, I decided to put together this newsletter through AuthorsDen to get some of the waiting reviews out there and in the public.

Feel free to pass this invitation on to others. Thanks, and enjoy.

In October of 2002, Writers Club Press published a unique book for children by G. A. Nuhern titled "A Christmas List Learn And Have Fun In School and The Magic Of Wisdom" that features three short stories. Animated animals with human traits, take part in describing realistic situations such as the importance of school, problem solving, and the dangers in smoking and drugs. The book, divided into 116 pages, contains a single paragraph on each page. This technique makes it easy for the child reader to stop reading whenever they want, and to pick it up again later. Accompanying the tales, hand-drawn black and white illustrations, adorn a few of the pages. This book is for children five to twelve years of age. A MAGICAL CHRISTMAS EVE FOR JO-JO THE HOBO MOUSE by JOHN O'NEILL
Reviewed by: Jennifer LB Leese, http://www.geocities.com/ladyjiraff, AStoryWeaver@aol.com
Published by Trafford Publishing, http://www.trafford.com
Format: Paperback
24 pages
ISBN: 155395296-0

Told in rhyme, A MAGICAL CHRISTMAS EVE FOR JO-JO THE HOBO MOUSE by John O’Neill is a delightful Christmas story about a little traveling mouse named Jo-Jo

On the look-out for a warm place to rest, Jo-Jo ran to the top of a hill. Down below he saw a welcoming sight…a country house. Inside the house, Jo-Jo found a little bed, perfect for a weary mouse, where he made himself right at home and fell asleep. When a loud sound from the room outside his door awakened him, he decided to investigate. To Jo-Jo’s surprise, he saw a jolly old man dressed in red, filling a sack with presents. He knew immediately that he was Santa Claus.

A MAGICAL CHRISTMAS EVE FOR JO-JO THE HOBO MOUSE isn’t a story full of hair-raising horror, or life-threatening danger, but it is a story full of Christmas cheer, and magical moments. This book is sure to be a new holiday favorite for many little folks and their families. Jo-Jo is a famous mouse who goes down in history as one of the creatures who wasn’t stirring in Clement Clarke Moore’s “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

This reviewer believes that John O’Neill has written a festive book for children that flows well, stirs the imagination, and is easy-to-read. It has adorable hand drawn illustrations that will make the reader smile. The cheery drawings work well with the whimsical text.

When readers purchase A MAGICAL CHRISTMAS EVE FOR JO-JO THE HOBO MOUSE from Trafford Publishing’s website, a portion of book sales will go to the “Children’s Literacy Initiative.”

O’Neill wrote this story in the early 1970s for his daughters. He willingly supports his wife of 37 years in her chosen career as an independent mortgage closer. With grown daughters, and five grandchildren, he has plenty of fans. O’Neill writes poetry as a hobby on a wide variety of subjects, and he is currently working on a series of stories featuring Jo-Jo the Hobo Mouse, all with a historical lesson for children.

This reviewer highly recommends A MAGICAL CHRISTMAS EVE FOR JO-JO THE HOBO MOUSE by John O’Neill.

BLUEGUM CHRISTMAS: A MIRACLE AT SASSAFRAS CREEK by Marlies Bugmann
Reviewer: Jennifer LB Leese, http://www.geocities.com/ladyjiraff
Publisher: Zumaya Publications.com
Release: 2002
ISBN: 1-894869-85-0

Book number two in the Green Heart Series, Bugmann's book for children is a quick, satisfying read. Her book educates children in the importance of taking care of our ecosystem in a fiction plot using a little eight-year-old boy named Ben Arthurson and a little ten-year-old girl named Samantha Hogan. Together they learn the uniqueness of the rare and beautiful Christmas birds; save the bluegum trees from destruction, and learn to appreciate nature and their surroundings. Bugmann's book comes highly recommended by this reviewer and her children.

YESTERDAY I HAD THE BLUES by Jeron Ashford Frame
Published by Tricycle Press, http://www.tenspeed.com
ISBN: 1-58246-084-1

In YESTERDAY I HAD THE BLUES a little boy and his family feels a rainbow of colors. When moods change, people feel certain ways and it is sometimes described through colors. Such as feeling sad is blue, feeling mad is red, and feeling happy is yellow.

As the little boy moves throughout his day, he learns that his dad feels grays, his grandma feels yellows, his mom feels reds, and his little sister feels pinks. In the end, he learns that no matter what you feel at the moment, you never know what tomorrow will bring, and as long as you have family, love is all colors.

Each page is brilliantly put together in a vivid display of color, drawn by R. Gregory Christie, and they just add to the magical fun.

This reviewer found Frame's book easy to read, fun to look at, and something to read over and over again.

BARN SNEEZE by Karen Winnick

Published by Boyds Mills Press, http://www.boydsmillspress.com
Release: April 2002
Format: Hard Cover
32 pages
ISBN: 1-56397-948-9

BARN SNEEZE is an adorable picture book for children ages 2-6 years of age.

Sneezing noises overtake the barnyard, when the cow catches a sneeze from the blowing wind. Cow passes the sneeze onto duck, duck passes the sneeze onto pig, and pig passes the sneeze onto horse…and so on, until all the animals in the barn catches the sneeze.

BARN SNEEZE is filled with moo-choos, quack-choos, neigh-choos, and even peep-choos. This entertaining book features rhyming text that all children will adore. Winnick’s charming book is perfect for beginning readers, and for children just starting out in school.

My children, ages eleven, six, and five, loved this charming book, which set off an explosion of questions. We had a lot of fun coming up with different animal and insect sneezes. The hand drawn illustrations are a delight to look at as the story is being read to little listeners. We enjoyed Ms. Winnick’s book BARN SNEEZE and this reviewer highly recommends it for your little ones.

The author, Karen Winnick, is the book’s author and illustrator. Ms. Win nick is a member of the Board of Commissioners for the Los Angeles Zoo; she’s on the Board of Trustees at Brown University, on the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Museum in New York, on the US Holocaust Memorial Museum Council, and on the Syracuse University Hillel Board of Governors.

Her works have appeared in numerous magazines and she’s even produced a play about Jewish children sent to England during WWII called Kindertransport.

Dotti Enderle's book tells the story of little Logan and his mother. Every time his mother asks him to complete a task such as pick up his toys or to take a bath, Logan asks her why. His mother's response is clear and simple—"BECAUSE I SAID SO." In the end of this delightful illustrated book, Logan surprises his mother with a reply to her why question. Highly recommended by an author not to be missed!
