Hello, do you love books? Want to read about your favorites?

It's Only Ink! Children's Book Review Newsletter is for children's book reviews. My name is Jennifer LB Leese. I am an author of children's picture books, young adult gothic, fantasy novels, and paranormal romance novels. I am also a children's book reviewer, copyeditor, freelance writer, and feature article writer and managing editor for the local Picket News. As a book reviewer, I have many authors, publishers, and publicists sending me tons of books for review. Because of this, I tend to get overloaded and have no where to send the reviews. So, I decided to put together this newsletter through AuthorsDen to get some of the waiting reviews out there and in the public.

Feel free to pass this invitation on to others. Thanks, and enjoy.

SWORDS FOR HIRE by Will Allen is a remarkable hard-to-put-down book for young adults. Published by Centerpunch Press, readers who enjoy fantasy, adventure, set during medieval times will surely love this comical and fun book that is full of vivid detail. This book has it all…dark dungeons, betrayal, kidnapping, magic, evil, and treachery, plus much more. Inspired by William Goldman's The Princess Bride, twenty-year-old Will Allen wrote this book in 1979. Unfortunately, he passed away from melanoma the same year. His brother, Paul Allen, had his book printed for the world to enjoy. This reviewer found Allen's book extremely satisfying, enjoyable and fantastic. Reviewed by: Jennifer LB Leese,

Reviewer: Jennifer LB Leese,

After Sarah-Jane tells her cousins Titus and Timothy a poem about a purple cow, a piece of paper rolls up beside them. Written on the paper in cut-out magazine letters is a ransom note demanding a secret recipe in exchange for a purple cow! Now they have a mystery to solve. This book is superb. Readers won't believe who the cow-nappers are. As with all the YOUNG COUSINS MYSTERIES books, The Purple Cow Mystery is just as exciting, adventurous, and fun. These books, divided into small chapters, formatted with double spacing with large font, make it easy for early readers to enjoy on their own. The scenarios are realistic, and the young characters are just like real little boys and girls. This reviewer gives it five stars!
The Magic of the Bear by Lenore Ashby
Published by Granite Publishing and Distribution
ISBN: 0-9728535-0-2
Reviewed by Jennifer LB Leese,

Set in the mid-1800s "The Magic of the Bear" is full of mystery, adventure, and magic. When two boys, Peteetneet, a Ute Indian from the Blue Shining Mountains, and Will from Boston, come together because of a rare albino bear cub, the adventure begins. Before they know it, they find themselves running for their lives when Squash Head, an Indian who despises the white man, and Cub Bear Butler, a mean mountain man from Utah who traps bear cubs for money, start after them. The boys are determined to find out who killed the clan chief, to free the albino bear cub and the sacred bear claw necklace.

Ashby's book is one of few accepted at the Capitol Reef National Monument. Although her book is fictional, she used nothing but facts when writing the part about the Ute Indian culture, ceremonies, and traditions. Ashby's well-written pre-teen novel features realistic characters and dialogue and takes readers on a fantastic journey back in time to the 1800s.

This reviewer thoroughly enjoyed Ashby's novel and gladly recommends it to young adult readers.
The Elephant in My Tree by Buzzy

Reviewer: Jennifer LB Leese,

After having a great day at school, Buzzy's mom took him to the grocery store for something special. Buzzy searched until he found a huge bag of peanuts. The next day when he went for his special bag of peanuts, they could not find them anywhere. Buzzy searched, and what he found was that a huge circus elephant had taken his huge bag of peanuts!

THE ELEPHANT IN MY TREE by Buzzy is a cute story for children ages four and up. As an entertaining soft cover storybook, it is sure to make your children giggle.

The colorful illustrations, hand-drawn by talented illustrator Matt Lyons, comes to life when read with the child-like dialogue.

Serendipity and the Dream Catcher by Gwyn English Nielsen
Published by CGS Press
ISBN: 0-9660726-2-6
Reviewed by Jennifer LB Leese,

Sera, short for Serendipity, is not your average pre-teen. Sometimes referred to as "weird," Sera enjoys reading from the dictionary. In fact, she collects words. Sera is without a doubt, a bookworm.

When bad dreams, which include a class bully, named Devin Sharkwell, cause her sleeping troubles, her uncle Daryl, a hippie, gives her a Native American dream catcher. Remarkably, the dream catcher takes Sera on an exciting journey within her dreams.

This reviewer enjoyed Nielsen's young adult book and highly recommends it for all young readers. Her story is realistic and the characters come to life. A real page-turner, "Serendipity and the Dream Catcher" is a true find.
Piece = Part = Portion = Fractions = Decimals = Percents by Scott Gifford
Published by Tricycle Press,
ISBN: 1-58246-102-3

"Piece = Part = Portion = Fractions = Decimals = Percents" teaches children how to look at fractions, decimals, percents, and pieces, parts, and portions stress free.

Each page features a photograph of everyday things children can relate to such as sports, food, and clothing. On the opposite page, the author, Scott Gifford, explains the photograph with fractions, decimals, and percents. In no time, children will learn that these sometimes confusing math terms mean the same thing all together, but can be presented in different ways.

Thankfully, on the inside front page, the author describes how to master the language or mathematics in easy to understand terms.

This reviewer, and her 12-year-old son and struggling math student, found Gifford's book a wonderful asset to our family's library.
MY COOKIE BUSINESS by Dianne Linderman
Published by The First Moms Club,
ISBN: 0-9704876-0-6
Reviewer: Jennifer LB Leese,

Elizabeth enjoys spending time at her Nana's cottage at the beach. However, this year Elizabeth found a new summer business—making and selling her nana's famous cookies. Welcoming and soothing smells of cookies baking draw cookie-lovers in from everywhere.

Children will enjoy the charming drawings and Elizabeth's enthusiasm. Parents will enjoy the lessons taught—creativity, confidence, and the importance to believe in one's self. This reviewer highly recommends this book for all young people.
Miss Bumples Lands on Earth by Jennifer E. Sheehan
Published by Bumples,
ISBN: 0-9700952-6-0

Ms. Bumples is a blue, furry creature from the planet Mars. She arrives on Earth looking for a place to live. In doing so, she meets animals from different parts of the world. Now that she is out of her own element, she feels alone and frightened.

This book teaches children to look beyond differences in others and to be kind and helpful. It is an encouraging book for children and this reviewer and her three children thoroughly enjoyed every colorful and comical page.

The author's characters are adorable, sweet, and sometimes mischievous.

MISS BUMPLES LANDS ON EARTH is the third book in a series written by Jennifer E. Sheehan that features the adventures of Miss Bumples.
Millions to Measure by David M. Schwartz
Published by HarperCollins Publishers
ISBN: 0-688-12916-1

Set in comic book style, Schwartz's book MILLIONS TO MEASURE teaches children how to measure with ease. The comical full-color illustrations, by talented artist Steven Kellogg, take children throughout the globe on their quest for knowledge. They learn cool stuff like people used to measure height by using their own feet, and that weight was determined by using stones, and different container sizes to measure volume.

Schwartz takes the confusion out of the world of metrics and makes it simple for children to understand the basic pattern of meters, liters, and grams by introducing them to a fun method of learning.

This reviewer is thankful for such books as Schwartz's, and feels confident that parents and teachers will feel the same.
Kids' Party Games & Activities by Penny Warner

Penny Warner has done it again. Her book KIDS' PARTY GAMES & ACTIVITIES is a splendid guide to children's games and activities from age two to twelve. This book isn't just for children's birthday parties, it can also be used at schools, child care centers, athletic events for children, rainy days, and I'm-just-bored days.

There are hundreds of entertaining things for kids to do listed in this 213-page soft cover book. There are traditional favorites and brand new ones, as well. Each game or activity includes instructions, creative options, prizes, favors, and trouble-shooting tips to help gear the game or activity towards your wants and needs. The hand-drawn illustrations allow children to visualize what they need to do.

This reviewer, who plans to put this book to good use with her three children, highly recommends KIDS' PARTY GAMES & ACTIVITIES by Penny Warner.

When Holly Hale's family inherits a home from a great aunt she never met, her and her family move there. However, soon after she finds that her great aunt had unusual tastes and lived in poor conditions. After making a few friends, Holly grows to enjoy the house, now that her parents had cleaned it up, and soon finds herself unscrambling challenging riddles that her great aunt created before she died. As a small chapter book, this story is excellent for middle grade readers. Her characters are realistic; the dialogue works well, and the scenery is descriptive--the whole book is down right enjoyable, and it comes highly recommended by this reviewer.
FORTUNE TELLERS CLUB: Playing With Fire by Dotti Enderle is a fantastic young reader's book with supernatural elements. When Anne falls for Eric, a boy with pyrokinesis (the mental ability to create fire), she soon finds that she has to compete for his attention. She relies on the help of her friends and fellow tarot card readers, Juniper and Gena, to help her. Tension, disbelief, and suspicion explode in this wonderfully written book. As with all of Enderle's books, I found this one exciting and extremely difficult to put down. The Fortune Tellers Club is a series of books worth reading. Fortune Tellers Club: The Magic Shades by Dotti Enderle
Published by Llewellyn Publications,
ISBN: 0-7387-0341-9

Many reviewers feel that sequels or anything past the second book loses its je ne sais quoi. That is not true for Dotti Enderle's young adult series, Fortune Tellers Club. Each and every book featuring Gena, Juniper, and Anne is extremely brilliant.

In FORTUNE TELLERS CLUB: THE MAGIC SHADES, the third book in the series, Gena finds a pair of sunglasses in a thrift store. She loves them, but everyone else thinks they are hideous. As the story progresses, Gena learns that the sunglasses are magical. On top of fighting to keep her family just her and her father, by not letting the new girlfriend in, she has to figure out if what the glasses shows her is true. For a reason she does not understand, she is able to see the future. However, she does not see the whole picture, just bits and pieces. Does Gena need to see the future if the magic sunglasses keeps messing everything up?

FORTUNE TELLERS CLUB: THE MAGIC SHADES is an exceptional book. It teaches its readers not to believe everything they see.
COWS IN THE HOUSE by Beverly Lewis

Published by Bethany House,
Format: Hard Cover
ISBN: 0-7642-2096-9

COWS IN THE HOUSE is the story of a barefoot boy from Thailand who lives with his five noisy sisters, and his mother and father. By the advice of his wise great-grandfather, the barefoot boy invited cows, musicians, and cousins to stay at his house. Even though he didn’t understand why, he did so and quickly learned a valuable lesson from it. COWS IN THE HOUSE is a book about teaching children the important lesson of being able to accept your life the way it is, and not to get greedy with your wishes.

My children enjoyed Beverly Lewis’s charming book, as did I. Parents and teachers will love the moral lesson and children will love the tale, as well as the colorful illustrations throughout the book. If you have children who enjoy being read to, or who enjoy reading by themselves, then COWS IN THE HOUSE is a book that they will certainly treasure.

Beverly Lewis was born in Pennsylvania. She was a schoolteacher, who is a member of The National League of American Pen Women—Pikes Peak Branch—and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Lewis lives in Colorado with her husband.
