Okay, most of them might have a few gifts here and there that the rest of us don't, but otherwise, they are just like you and me, just a little larger than life .

Odds and Ends

Started the "summer" movie season off on the right foot, rushed out to see VAN HELSING (Hugh Drool Jackman, or Sigh, take your pick ). Great movie! Loved the special effects, the storyline, the characters, the action, the sense of humor….just an all around excellent film. For vampire and werewolf fans and all things that go bump in the night, this is the film for you. Also caught TROY. Excellent film. Well choreographed action/war scenes, great acting, very affecting characterization and plot. Great summer movie. For Pitt, Bloom and Bana fans, a must-see. As you can imagine, I've got a little list a brewing of the other movies I'm itching to see this sumer (The Day After Tomorrow, The Chronicles of Riddick – fell in love with Vin in Pitch Black and have been a fan ever since – Shrek II, and of course Spiderman II – been a Toby fan since Pleasantville. This's just for starters. The more I go to the movies, the more previews I see (saw a Keanu SciFi movie coming up and a Will Smith one that I simply must see . Will keep you all posted…)

Don't miss the exciting news this issue about NBI's latest partnership.

MAKING THE ROUNDS: "A man who wants to save the world one child at a time…a young teen looking for acceptance and a savior wherever he can find them…and a woman who wants only to save them both. Somewhere between darkness and daylight they will all find and save each other." BETWEEN DARKNESS AND DAYLIGHT, paranormal psychic romance, and a NCWA (New Century Writer Award) 2003 Novel/Novella Finalist, by Gracie C. McKeever .

NEW NBI PARTNERSHIP: NovelBooks, Inc. announces asset acquisition partnership with the leader in global inventory-free fulfillment

DOUGLAS, Massachusetts

NovelBooks, Inc., a leader in on-line publisher of electronic and trade paperback books, announced a strategic alliance with BookSurge, LLC, the Print-On-Demand leader in global inventory-free book fulfillment. BookSurge currently operates inventory-free distribution facilities in seven countries around the world and sells titles in over 20 languages.

"This association will allow NovelBooks, Inc. to concentrate on exploring publishing avenues that previously had been out of our reach," said Penny Hussey, Founder & Publisher of NBI. "As a small, independent publisher it is difficult to find quality distribution of our books and even more difficult to find relationships within the traditional publishing structure that allow for sufficient cash flow. With Booksurge assuming operational responsibilities we can concentrate on our core competencies, while our books are distributed worldwide. Most importantly, NBI can be insured of making money when those books sell."

"In addition," Hussey continued, "NBI will now be positioned to meet the needs of many traditionally published authors who have their rights back from out-of-print books, and who want those same books to be available once again to the public, both in the United States and world wide."

"With strong pressures on traditional publishing houses to find best-sellers, strong mid-list books are now being published by this new breed of IF (Inventory-Free) publishers," says BookSurge Sr. VP of Sales and Marketing, Mitchell Davis. "These publishers are fast to market, have a strong understanding of their genre's reader base and expect to sell books profitably. NBI is one of the strongest publishers in this new game. They have a list of award-winning authors and a powerful editorial team. Now they can concentrate on acquiring new authors and growing their business in a smart way. We expect great things from this relationship."

"The future of NovelBooks is truly exciting," said Hussey. "We recently sold out of our entire first run of a paranormal anthology 'Once In A Blue Moon' at the Romantic Times Book Lovers Convention in New York and we are starting a marketing push for that book in Europe and Australia. We are also working on a new project, 'Ladies Who Bite'-which profiles the Top Ten Vampire Novelists of 2004. Authors will include Heather Graham, Anne Rice, Christine Feehan, and other best selling authors of the genre. Projects such as this would not have been possible prior to our teaming up with BookSurge."

NovelBooks, Inc. opened its doors in September, 2001. They were the first on-line publisher to offer all their books in electronic and print formats, simultaneously. NBI has consistently been at the forefront of the on-line publishing industry, offering readers quality, award-winning books at reasonable and affordable prices. Another popular NBI feature is to offer free short stories by their authors. Anyone visiting the website can read any of the over 100 short stories in order to get a taste of the authors before committing to purchase a book.

BookSurge, LLC started in 1999 is the world's only company with a worldwide network to sell books in leading retail and wholesale channels with no inventory. They have written software and established worldwide alliances with publishing industry leaders to allow books to be manufactured "just-in-time" and shipped to customers, anywhere on the planet, in less than two days.

WHAT I'M READING/RECOMMENDED READS: Okay, you got me! Several of the selections this newsletter all happen to come from a certain e-publisher again. I can't help it, I love their books, and there's such a wide variety of genres. Anyway, hope you enjoy them and the rest of the selections this newsletter as much as I did:

AMERICAN BEAUTY by Ashley Ladd: Playboy and police lieutenant Brad Mueller goes undercover in drag to bring down a car theft ring. Being in drag becomes even more of drag when he becomes attracted to his broke and newly-dumped landlady Kirsten Engel, but can't risk showing his lust or risk blowing his cover. The solution? He has to let her continue to think he's a hot masculine piece of flesh who's bitten the dust and is bisesexual. Great character chemistry, loads of laughs, a good story. This one's available from e-publisher

AS YOU WISH by Myra Nour: It's not your Mom's I Dream of Jeannie. A funny, fast-paced erotica with a playboy who has no intentions on settling down, but with the potential to be an understanding and sensitive mate, and his genie Amira who falls in love with her new master who reminds her of her old love. This one's also available from e-publisher

FANTASY LOVER by Sherrilyn Kenyon: I fought getting on this particular bandwagon for a long time. This prequel stand-alone novel that introduces characters from the Dark-Hunter series pulled me in instantly. Julian of Macedon is a real babe – courageous and tortured – and a perfect match for intelligent and sensitive psychiatrist Grace Alexander. Like PRETTY WOMAN, Grace rescues her man right back. You can check this title out at

IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT by Judy Mays: Wow! Can you say hot? I must mention, I started out hating the hero (Kearnan Gray), but by book's end his Alpha ways had won me over (what can I say, there were extenuating circumstances, and if you read this book, you'll understand what I mean).
This one's available from e-publisher A definite must for werewolf fans.

LIVE A LITTLE by Nancy Warran: This Blaze selection from Harlequin (December #19) finds staid and engaged accountant Cynthia Baxter handcuffed to the bed to open the story. Trying to excite her doctor fiance Walter and add some spice to their relationship, but failing miserably. In to the rescue barges FBI agent Jake Wheeler who immediately mistakes Cynthia for a fast and easy bad girl. She reminds him of his former girlfriend, so no way is he about to get involved, despite recruiting Cynthia to help him out on an "unofficial" case in need of an accountant. Quick read, interesting story line, characters have good chemistry. I won my copy in an author contest, but you should be able to check this out at

NIGHT PLEASURES by Sherrilyn Kenyon: First book in the Dark-Hunter Series features Kyrian of Thrace (introduced in FANTASY LOVER) Dark-Hunter vamp and Amanda Devereaux, a "boring" accountant trying to live a normal life and in denial of her paranormal "gifts". They're forced together, fall in love and finally join forces to thwart powerful Daimon and demigod Desidarius. Great read and official kick-off to the series. Check this one out at your local bookstore or

THE HUNTRESS by Barbara Karamazin: Excellent Science Fiction Erotica! Enemy Mine with spice. Rulagh is an exo-biologist on a mission. A reptilian/mammal on earth for 10-years to hunt and destroy feral chupacabras, alien pets, Shrennans, left on earth by wealthy tourists. Sonia Rodriguez is a wealthy heiress whose father's will stipulates that she must stay in the secured family estate in Cabo Rojo for a year in order to gain her inheritance. Rulagh is already living at the estate, a friend of her father, and with her father when he died. Together the human and alien join forces to hunt the chupacabras. Along the way, they fall in love, and learn about each other's cultures. Great plot, sizzling chemistry, sensuality easily sustained through-out, and well-crafted believable world-building. You can check this one out at

By Dr. Bob Rich
After many rejections, an author finally finds a publisher. The book comes
out, sits on the shelves for a few weeks — then the print run is pulped.
If this weren’t true, and a fiction writer invented it, no-one would believe
the concept. It’s just too bizarre. And yet it happens, time and again.
There is a joke in the publishing industry. The only people who make money
from books are the transport companies who take new books from publisher to
bookshop, and unsold returns back again.

This costs all of us
Even if you have never bought a book, you are paying for the wastage. Books
are made from trees. Trees keep us all alive. Climate change has already
occurred. It’s killed people and destroyed property through the increased
severity of storms, bushfires, droughts, floods. In some places, global
warming is causing excessively cold winters. Think of what will happen if
melting polar ice changes the sea currents like the Gulf Stream.
You are paying for the destruction of forests through erosion of topsoil,
increased cost of building, pollution of waterways.

Your children, our children, are paying even more. Their future is being
pulped by the inefficiencies of the publishing industry.

New technology offers solutions
It doesn’t have to be done this way. Technology is now available to do it
better. There is a vital and burgeoning new industry of electronic publishers. The
large, established publishing industry could also join in, but even if they
choose to be dinosaurs, you can benefit from the many advantages of
electronic books. This is far more than the environmental benefits of not
wasting paper. Have a look at or to find out about the many ways electronic books will
benefit you: lower price, the ability to zoom in for easier reading, less
weight to carry and many other excellent features.
But if you must have a book on paper, you can do it without supporting
environmental idiocy. This is through print on demand technology. Instead of
a warehouse full of books that may never be sold, the book can be printed
one at a time, in about the time it takes to buy and drink a cup of coffee.
No more wastage, no more returns.

EPIC, the organisation of writers who support electronic publication of
their books, is doing everything in its power to advance these new,
environmentally responsible solutions. Look it up at
One of the surprises will be the high quality and freshness of the books
they offer. Why put up with the same old tired formulas?
