======================================================
Happy New Year and welcome back to this issue of The G-Spot!

Hope everyone enjoyed a happy, healthy and safe Holiday with your family and friends and that you’re all still sticking with those New Year’s Resolutions you made (you know the ones I’m talking about…lose weight...yadda, yadda, yadda...stop smoking...yadda, yadda, yadda...and so on ).

Movies: Took the nieces and nephews to see HAPPY FEET Thanksgiving weekend (and no I didn't take them as a cover. The movie looked that good that I would have gone by myself to see it if necessary ). What can I say? It was one of the best movies I've seen in a looooong while. Beautiful choreography, soundtrack and musical arrangements, stunning visuals, evocative and poignant coming-of-age storyline that just really plucked at my heartstrings and funny bone. I highly recommend this one for children young and old ! Caught THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS with my sister last month too and wow...wow...wow...First HAPPY FEET now this (are we sensing a pattern with the "happy" theme?). But seriously, this movie was absolutely wonderful. I have long been a Will Smith fan (but really jumped on the bandwagon after that scene in the shower in I, ROBOT...can you say yummy?). But Will and Jaden together were an emotional, powerhouse combination on screen. Both were so natural and awe-inspiring and just went through their scenes and dialogue, IMHO, as if there was no camera rolling. The subject matter of the movie was solid enough, but Will and Jaden made it evocative and meaningful (certain scenes, admittedly, did make me choke up and cry and if you go see the move, I'm sure you'll know what they were). Needless to say, this was an excellent movie, and another I would highly recommend. I know you’ve probably all been bombarded with the raves for DREAMGIRLS. I was admittedly caught up in the hype, but not enough to run out and see it at the Ziegfeld in a special pre-release engagement for $25.00. I do have some patience. Caught this one with my niece New Year’s Eve weekend and we took in the matinee ($6.75—whaddabahgain!). Well worth the wait!!! An absolutely excellent movie. Pathos, humor, drama, beautifully and passionately performed musical numbers, excellent acting performances by one and all, but especially Jennifer Hudson. She lives up to all the hype in my book and more. But when she sings….oh my goodness, I had shivers of excitement running up and down my spine. She brings down the house with her rendition of “I’m Not Going” (the audience gave an ovation at the showing I went to). Looking forward to Oscar Night just to see if she can pull off her Cinderella year and win. Now on a totally different note…caught BLACK CHRISTMAS. Gory in typical, serial-killer-on-the-loose-during-a-major-holiday fashion, but it did have action from beginning to end and a passable backstory of dark familial dysfunction, visceral murder and madness. I’ve seen better, but I’ve seen a lot worse. Finally took in NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM a few weeks after it was released, and saw why it was doing so well. Funny, fast-paced, fantasy, action-adventure with plenty for kids and adults to enjoy. At least my nephews and niece and I really enjoyed it.

Cable/DVD: Caught PRIME with Uma Thurman (one of my favorite actresses) and Meryl Streep. Excellent May/December romance (I always need pointers, especially since some of my heroines seem to like younger men lately ). This was initially marketed and promo’ed as a comedy, but there was so much more going on than the comedic possibilities inherent in a younger man/older woman scenario. There was the ethical dilemma of Meryl Streep’s character treating the woman who’s dating her son, then there was the religious angle (the son was Jewish and Uma wasn’t). Solid story and acting, this was a good romantic comedy I recommend. Also caught HIGH TENSION. Brutal serial killer movie with a sick twist I really didn’t’ see coming. Great characterizations (I cared about the victims and was rooting for the “heroine.” I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. In other words, it was a pretty good movie, different. Some subtitles (French production), but not enough to detract from the action. Now on the other side of the fence, caught SEE NO EVIL on DVD. Lots of unknown actors in a story about a group of misfits and lawbreakers stalked by a hulking serial killer in an abandoned hotel they’ve been assigned to clean to knock time off their sentence(s). Serial killer, of course has some religious and Mama issues to go with his guilt over desiring “slutty” girls. Typical slasher flick, nothing much new, but it did pass the time for an hour-and-a-half. Caught ANNAPOLIS (James Franco and Tyrese Gibson). Pretty much AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN, JR. It was passable—performances, plot, overall execution. Nothing spectacular or at the very least original. I’m glad I waited for this to come on cable. I would have been disappointed had I slapped down $10 to see this in the movies.

Now for some writing and publication news :
New from Siren: IN PLAIN SIGHT was released (electronically and in print) last month and was also the December 2006 featured book at Siren Publishing. I’m proud to say it was the #1 SIREN TOP SELLER for December. Here’s hoping the trend continues. Check out the story-behind-the-story for IN PLAIN SIGHT in this issue of the newsletter. Also new, the SISTERS OF EMSHARRA print collection was released along with TERMS OF SURRENDER print version. Check out the Siren site and/or the Amazon links in this issue of the newsletter to learn more and to purchase.

Upcoming Anthologies/Books/Novellas: I have a novella included in the upcoming RAPTURE 1 (SIREN SCORCHERS) Anthology. The novella is the third story in my SISTERS OF EMSHARRA series and is entitled SENTINEL’S HUNGER. Not only am I excited about being included in this ambitious undertaking with three other very talented Siren authors, but I’m pretty excited about the story and the characters and the fact that I’ve created, I believe, another authentic alpha/dom hero (I’m getting pretty good at this for a person who, as recent as a year ago, wasn’t too crazy about alpha male heroes . And although I’m sure there’s some arrogant-jerky alphas out there I still won’t be crazy reading about, I try to make my own guys as jerk-free, and irresistible as possible ). RAPTURE 1 will be available at YOUR LOCAL BOOKSTORES mid-2007 and I’m so excited about this!! For more information on this Siren anthology, visit here: http://www.sirenpublishing.com/rapture

Due out next month for your reading pleasure is my paranormal romance BETWEEN DARKNESS AND DAYLIGHT. This one involves duty-bound social worker and single uncle, Zane Youngblood, raising his grief-stricken and emotionally troubled nephew Ransom and who wants to save the world one child at a time. Nova Foxx is the reluctant psychic commodities trader who wants only to save Zane and Ransom.

Also on the horizon, Siren Publishing will be turning out a line of adult fairy tales and fables that puts a sensual and erotic spin on some of your old favorites and some surprising twists and turns that should make you ask: Why didn’t I think of that? Never able to say no to a writing challenge and solicitation, my NINE INCHES OF SNOW AND THE EBONY PRINCESS (it’s a twist on SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARVES if you hadn’t already guessed) is included in the group of tales due for release starting Mid-2007. I’ve already gotten a cover for my novella and it is...you know the drill…BEAUTIFUL! Jinger has outdone herself. Check out the cover here:
http://www.sirenpublishing.com/authors-img/gcm-ft-9ios.jpg

Whoo-hoo! The cover for MANIFEST DESTINY is up at Siren too and, as usual, it’s a beaut . Check it out here: http://www.sirenpublishing.com/authors-img/gcm-md.jpg Thanks to Jinger once again for capturing the essence of the theme and the hero/heroine of my story!

I finally sent out IDLE HANDS the beginning of December for consideration in Zane’s CHOCOLATE FLAVA 2 Anthology. Cross your fingers for me and wish me luck!
That’s all for now.
As always, hope you enjoy this issue of The G-Spot!

BENEATH THE SURFACE COVER OF THE WEEK!
As you can imagine, I was so excited to learn that the cover for Beneath the Surface had earned cover of the week honors at Romance Erotica Connection 12/10/06.
As you know the cover was created by prolific and talented cover artist Jinger Heaston and is one of many Siren Publishing, Inc. covers (my own as well as many other authors’ books) done by Jinger.
I love all of my covers but Beneath the Surface was the first one I collaborated on with Jinger for one of my books and it set the bar high for all of her following covers, which she has been reaching and continuing to surpass with her artistic vision and genius, IMHO, ever since.

PNR REVIEW OF APOCALYPSE DANCE, by Michael Barnette: “A year after a deadly SARS-like plague has befallen the human race, leaving civilization as we know it in a political and sociological shambles, America is made up of paramilitary groups and self-governing, sporadic municipalities fighting to survive amidst the rubble.

Among the survivors is one young, blonde man with arresting, color-change eyes and bells and feathers in his long, braided hair, hence his moniker “Bells…” To read my complete review visit Paranormal Romance here: http://www.paranormalromance.org/reviews/review.php?id=23201

MINI-REVIEWS (WHAT I'M READING/WHAT I BOUGHT/RECOMMENDED READS):

A DRUMMER’S BEAT TO MEND by Kei Swanson: As I mentioned before, I read this author’s previous WORDS OF THE PITCHER and enjoyed the sweet multi-cultural romance. This newest cross-cultural installment between an African American orthopedic surgeon and the Japanese drummer who she tries to heal after he’s suffered a traumatic accident to his hand is just as enchanting. Solid writing, poignant story, engaging characters. The h/h get their expected happily every after, but it does not come easy. This book is available From Genesis Press www.genesis-press.com

CAUGHT OFF GUARD by Tonya Ramagos: Dean Wolcott has left behind a disreputable bad-boy past to become a dedicated firefighter and a Captain with the Silver Springs Fire Department. When sexy, rich, newly widowed Veronica Abbot, who he has been fantasizing about for years, returns to town after a long absence and opens an erotica shop, Dean’s wildest fantasies are about to come true…or are they? This is a fast-paced and scorching read. The scene at the fire station alone is worth the price of admission. This one’s available from Siren Publishing and I recommend it. www.sirenpub.com

DESERT HEAT by Melodee Aaron: In this second Ike Payne Adventure book we get to see the solidification of Ike and Devon’s relationship and the blossoming relationship between their friends Princess Miranda and the young royal’s bodyguard, Marine Sergeant Jack Ingram who also works for Ike. The two couples are on a diplomatic mission when their spacecraft crash lands on the planet Nerumie where they are suddenly thrown into the middle of a civil war threatening to rage out of control. Trying to survive amidst the indigenous wildlife without succumbing to starvation, dehydration and the elements, the foursome are soon set upon and taken prisoner by one of the warring factions of Nerumie. The action, adventure and political intrigue are stepped up a notch from FTLOP as are the emotions and sexual encounters between the lead characters. The possibilities for future books involving the main characters—Ike, Devon, Miranda and Jack—make my mouth water with the erotic and exciting possibilities. www.sirenpub.com

EASY, by Ally Blue: This m/m romance is my second read by this author (the first being FORGOTTEN SONG) and I have to say each book gets better and better. EASY features young forlorn prostitute Stevie (aka “Sunshine”) badly abused, beaten and abandoned by his latest john. To the rescue steps Dan, an orphan construction worker who hasn’t come out of the closet yet but cannot deny the instant allure of Stevie’s beautiful smile, soulful blue eyes and fresh, sexy body. Passionate and endearing characters, and solid story with enough action, twists and a fast-pace to make fans of this type of literature happy campers. This ones available from Loose Id http://www.loose-id.com

FOR THE LOVE OF PAYNE, by Melodee Aaron: A locked-door murderer is loose on His Majesty’s Starship Boone and Ike Payne, Marine Sergeant in charge of security has to find the killer among 24,000 suspects. Fast-paced and full of political suspense and intrigue, FTLOP is a well-researched sci-fi erotic romance with multi-dimensional h/h, well-crafted sub-plot characters and authentic firefight and battle scenes. Ikira is brash, no-nonsense, raw and a down-to-earth tomboy to boot. Together she and Devon Henson the young Lieutenant assigned to help her find the killer, have sizzling chemistry. I especially like that Ike is more experienced, sexually and professionally, than Devon and that Devon is comfortable enough in his masculinity not to care. Excellent read, recommended and available from Siren Publishing www.sirenpub.com

GAME, SET LOVE-MATCH by Sarah Dobbs: Top ranked tennis star Filippo Fernandez loses in the semis of Wimbeldon and goes to Los Tiquos for some R&R and to lick his wounds. His father, however, convinces him to meet with English journalist Cassie Miller for an interview for her magazine. What neither Fili or Cassie are prepared for is the instant lust that sweeps over them as quickly as the storm that sweeps over Los Tiquos and strands them together in Fili’s mansion. Humorous and sweet story set amidst my favorite spectator sport, with a sexy athletic Spaniard in shorts. What more could a reader as for? Available from Siren Publishing www.sirenpub.com

HEIRESS FOR HIRE, by Erin McCarthy: Ms. McCarthy never disappoints and this book is another shining example of why she’s an auto-buy for me (boy, I’m feeling kind of déjà vu-ish…have I said that before ?). Anyway, this one involves rich, pampered blond society girl who has the purse strings severed by her detached and disappointed father who wants her to start standing on her own two feet. Amanda Delmar is no sissy and decides to stick it out in Cuttersville (of course, she doesn’t have much of a choice since she only has about $57 in her designer pockets and no money for plane fare home). Danny Tucker, uncomplicated and big strapping farmer has a young eight-year old daughter that he didn’t know he had dumped on his doorstep one day by her cold conscienceless stepfather after the girl’s mother dies. Danny needs a nanny and fast. Problem is his daughter Piper won’t stay with his mother. The girl, however, has taken a shine to Amanda, which presents more problems than it solves since Danny has too and is trying to do everything in his power to avoid the stunning but spoiled society girl. Of course the pair can’t resist each other and eventually get together. What follows is touching, funny and endearing as only Ms. McCarthy can write it. You can buy this one at your local bookstore and most online at bookstores like www.amazon.com

THE BLONDE BOMBE TECH by Lara Santiago: I wipped through this one in a couple of days and finished right before press time eager to share how much I loved it . This is another winner from Lara with a suitably detestable politician who butts heads and undermines the h/h at every turn, and an irresistible couple in Jake Donovan and Sabrina Morgan. Sabrina is the only female bomb tech in the Heathton Sheriff Department. A mad bomber with an old and mean score to settle is stalking her and terrorizing the city with his destructive devices. In the opening scene of the book one such device throws Sabrina into the arms of sexy-as-sin firefighter Jake when she fails to defuse it in time. From here, the two take a whirlwind rollercoaster ride to love and romance while Sabrina tries to unravel the mysteries of her past and find the mad bomber before he strikes again. This was a tightly-woven whodunit, with fast-paced, spine-tingling suspense, a hunky and sensitive fireman hero and a sweet but emotionally-scarred, tough-broad heroine exorcising her demons through her job. It's an excellent book that I'd recommend to any erotic romance fan who also enjoys a solid and well-written story with universal and larger-than-life characters. www.sirenpub.com

THE WIVES TALES by Lara Santiago: What can I say except WOW? I gobbled up this series in one week and loved every breathtaking, erotic, well-crafted minute. Political intrigue, genetic engineering, betrayal, loyalty, sizzling hot and inventive sexual encounters, love and romance highlight all three books—THE MINER’S WIFE, THE EXECUTIVE’S WIFE and THE LAWMAN’S WIFE—that make up Lara Santiago’s frighteningly realistic vision of the future and women’s rights (or lack thereof) in America. Santiago’s world-building is inspired, her narratives fast-paced and well-written. Her heroes are noble and strong in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds and her heroines are beautiful and intelligent survivors in a man’s world run amok. All of the tales are available from Siren Publishing and I highly recommend that you run out and get your own copy of each one now! www.sirenpub.com

VIVA LAS BAD BOYS by HelenKay Dimon: Anthology of three hot stories set in Las Vegas and the fictional Berkley Hotel and Casino that suffers a blackout while under construction. Stuck in varying degrees of compromise within the Berkley during the power failure are three sexy hot bad boys: Jack McAllister, co-owner of Micron Industries on vacation; Zach Jacobs, the Lothario playboy chef; and Assistant Manager of the Berkley, Alex Mitchell. This is a sizzling and humorous collection of stories, engaging protagonists, and a nice tasty treat for anyone in the move for a quickie…as in a very satisfying story . You can buy this one at your local bookstore and most online at bookstores like www.amazon.com

Currently Reading: MURPHY’S LAW by Lori Foster

Books I’ve Bought/New-to-me-Authors: Someone up there must be listening to me. You know how I’m always complaining about not having enough F/m bdsm titles to read? Well, as I mentioned in November I bought a couple of Jude Mason titles in this genre. Now I’ve discovered another author who writes this genre, none other than this issue’s spotlight author, Michael Barnette! I picked up one of his Phaze titles and am looking into his others. I had added him as a friend at MySpace after reading and enjoying his profile, but didn’t get to fully enjoy his prowess until I sampled a couple of his excerpts on the 12/9/06 Chatting With Joyfully Reviewed Phaze Books Day. I ordered his APOCALYPSE DANCE that day! Read my PNR review to see how much I loved it . Another great read in this genre was THE CAMBION’S KISS by Raquel Taylor (Venus Press). I also did a review for this one, but it’s not up at PNR yet. Should be by the next newsletter and I’ll share it then.

I finished MINION by L.A. Banks, the first book in the Vampire Huntress Series. Had heard so many fantastic things about the series I started reading the book with high hopes and excited to sink my teeth into something new and different but maybe it was too new and different. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would and wanted to and I think this is because there wasn't that much romance and physical contact between the "heroine" and "hero". To be fair, this is not a romance (at least there wasn't much in this first book) and it wasn't a stand alone (which I really didn't appreciate as the ending left me hanging a lot more than I’m used to as with the Dark Hunters where there is a beginning, middle and end with a story resolution in each individual book of the series). It was my mistake for going in expecting equal parts romance and vampire huntress I suppose. But now I'm reluctant to continue the series since this one disappointed me so much. The writing was great, with lots of detailed research and creative world-building (sometimes too much), but I missed the action and adventure from the DH books and that physical contact and intimacy between a man and a woman throughout the tale. At this point, I don’t think the Vampire Huntress books are for me. This may change, but if any of the other books are as much of a struggle to get through for me as the first, I don’t think so.

REVIEW EXCERPTS:

BENEATH THE SURFACE:

“...Until this month, I had not read any of Gracie C. McKeever’s work, but I quickly devoured both of her books I received for review this month. After reading the other book first, I immediately turned to The Matchmaker, Book 1: Beneath the Surface. As much as I loved the other story, I adored Beneath the Surface!
I have to say, I wasn’t sure quite what to expect after reading the blurb for this one, but it just knocked my socks off. The paranormal element is ever present, and a key part of the plot, but it never feels like a paranormal story. It feels very realistic, with the familiarity of a story that is strictly contemporary, lending the psychic talents wielded by EJ and his sister more credibility….
The large Vega clan promises several entertaining sequels in this series, and I know there is already one released, which I will be working to get in my hot little hands just as soon as possible!” 5 Klovers, Jennifer, Kwips and Kritiques To read the full review, visit here: http://www.ck2skwipsandkritiques.com/beneaththesurface_jennifer.html

IN PLAIN SIGHT:

“...Gracie C. McKeever possesses an incredible imaginative ability and the gift to make any type of paranormal element, no matter how unusual, appear perfectly realistic and [acceptable]. With any of her stories, there is never a question of the reader's suspension of disbelief, it occurs
immediately, naturally, and very smoothly. Her action is fast-paced, and her characters are well-delineated. We come to know them as well as we understand our own friends and family, if not better. Any book by Ms.McKeever is well worth a first read and subsequent rereads, but in the
opinion of this reviewer IN PLAIN SIGHT is one of her best!” 5 Kisses, Frost, Two Lips Reviews To read the full review, visit here: http://www.twolipsreviews.com/content/index2.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=792&pop=1&page=0&Itemid=36

“...I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down until the last page was done. The triangle between Samantha, Dara and Caution is engrossing. You find yourself pulled into the story and go through the emotional rollercoaster with Dara and Samantha. Through it all there is still the fact that Samantha's killer is still on the loose which opens up a whole new aspect because it is all connected. To tell anymore would ruin the story. The love scenes are magnificent and full of erotic pleasure that never ends. Gracie McKeever is an author who has gone to the top of my auto buy list and after reading this tale readers will understand why.” 4.5 Blue Ribbons, Angel, Romance Junkies Readers. http://www.romancejunkiesreaders.com

SPELLS CAST IN SHADOWS:

“...Spells Cast In Shadows is the first book by Gracie C. McKeever I had the good fortune to read, and it will not be the last! With its powerful characters and an intense plot, it is easy to see why this book was the October Top Seller for Siren Publishing…
I can wholeheartedly recommend Spells Cast In Shadows to any readers who love a good erotic fantasy with a beautiful romance and a suspenseful plot promising several twists!” 4.5 Klovers, Jennifer, Kwips and Kritiques. SIREN DECEMBER FEATURE - IN PLAIN SIGHT: STORY BEHIND THE STORY:
Gracie C. McKeever on writing In Plain Sight: “By now fans of my work know how near and dear the theme of family ties and the paranormal genre are to me. In In Plain Sight I continue these trends exploring the relationship between twin brothers Caution and Dawson Foster and the two women who love them; the innate concept of good and evil as it relates to man in general, but particularly in a twin connection; and the redemptive possibilities inherent in reincarnation. Add these to the curiosity about the sometimes mystical twin bond and that of what happens to the human soul when the body dies, and you have the genesis behind In Plain Sight.
I hope my readers enjoy the universality of the characters at the center of In Plain Sight but more the growth of kick-ass heroines Dara Kelly and Samantha Taylor as they learn it’s never too late to right a wrong or find Mr. Right.” To read excerpts or purchase, visit here: http://www.sirenpub.com/graciecmckeever/ips.asp

THIS ISSUE’S NOVEL EXCERPT: Comes to us from Regency Romance author Ann Tracy Marr! Hope you enjoy:

ROUND TABLE MAGICIAN

The exclusive club was quiet. Sir Hurst Dunsmore sat by the fire, hiding behind a newspaper. He was thinking about his sister, Martha. Next year she would be at Camelot for her first season; he had resorted to writing lists of things to do for the momentous event.

Only a year before she came out. Sir Hurst wanted to be ready.

Trying to remember the name of the outstanding orchestra Mrs. Denby had hired, he was startled when Brinston dropped into the chair opposite, juggling a bottle. The newspaper fell and a grin split Hurst's face when he recognized one of his closest friends.

"Well. If it isn't Richard, the Most Honorable Knight Shipley," he said dryly. "Thought you had disappeared into Merlin's cave. Where've you been--on a quest? I looked for you in the Great Hall and later at the Heraldic ball. Thought sure you said you'd be there. Missed quite a gala--Caro and Byron had a dustup on the dance floor and the queen flapped her hands at them like chickens in her vegetables. I haven't laughed so hard since Perth fell out of the saddle."

Lord Brinston smiled. "My apologies, I was out of town." He scratched his stomach. "Forgive the vulgarity, Hurst, but Lady Pewett served marzipan. Must have had cinnamon in it; I've got welts all over. But that isn't my title, you knothead."

"It is now."

"Great Merlin. You mean the Council dumped another knighthood on my head?"

Hurst nodded. "Yes, the third, isn't it? For your services during the time of the quest."

"As if that mattered." Brinston sighed. "Searching for the Ark of the Covenant was one of the most witless things the Council of the Round Table has ordered. England's knights didn't need such an all-encompassing quest thrown at them."

"It spurred Napoleon and France on. Don't think those bloody jousts would have happened if he hadn't been determined to conquer every land he thought might hold the ark."

"As long as he stays on St. Helena. I have my hands full without him agitating."

Hurst filled his tea cup from his friend's bottle. Good old Brin. With his vast estates, endless investments, and matchless manners, the man's calendar frequently exploded. One couldn't be offended if he bogged down with something, even welts. Hurst asked, "You hale enough for a whirl? Could use your support. There's a new den on King Street that promises excellent sport. Perth wants to lose his fortune there."

Brinston shrugged. "Think I can come. Appears the Council will leave me alone. I was in Ramsgate; Du Lac was certain Collins would flub and begged me to be on the scene to wipe up after him. He was right. It got a bit nasty." He leaned over and poured more brandy into Hurst's cup. "Drink up; you're not going to find my tale as amusing as Caro Lamb."

Hurst enjoyed his chum's dramatic story of smugglers evading a military ambush. There could be no surprise the marquess was in the thick of the action; Brinston had served the Council of the Round Table for years and had all the fun. Look at his first quest: he'd organized the climbing boys of London into one organization with trustworthy men to oversee them. The unscrupulous sweeps who formerly held sway over the business had tried to kill Brin. He was, after all, dismantling a lucrative trade for them. The sweeps earned the money; the climbing boys did the work for no reward other than beatings and neglect. No more.

It was just like him--Hurst had never known his friend to shy from danger. Not only was he daring, Brin was whip smart and honorable. Wasn't fair he could spin a spell...Well, wouldn't do to get into that.

Brinston could paint the Sistine Chapel with words; Collins making a mull of the maneuvers put Hurst into whoops. "Fifteen of the ugliest females ever to grace the earth; that's what the men thought of the masquerading smugglers. They clomped into Ramsgate, boots under their skirts of all things, and the archers never thought a thing of it. Thank God Collins's subordinate was awake. He got a snoutful of the tale and hied off after the group with ten men who'd been posted to watch a warehouse. He took a chance, deserting his watch, but it paid off."

Through his chuckles, the thought hit Hurst. Why was Brinston relating this tale when he was normally so reticent about his activities?

"The archers caught up with the smugglers on the high street of Ramsgate, in front of a lady's emporium," Brinston continued. "You know the sort of place--a couple of counters--ribbons and lace. The lieutenant, after his genius deducing the smugglers' plan, made the mistake of challenging the 'women' right there in the presence of the citizenry. The gang headed into the shop in their skirts." He shrugged his disgust. "They had nowhere else to go."

His laughter fading, Hurst began to worry. Brin had warned he would not like the tale. The setting being Ramsgate, he had a suspicion... He interrupted. "My sister is at Ramsgate--Martha. You know what she looks like; I showed you her miniature." Brinston nodded and stared at the floor.

Silence fell as Hurst digested the tale, then he raised sharp eyes to his friend. "Finish," he demanded. "I had better know the worst."

"It isn't quite that bad," Brinston said. "She was in the shop of course, and one of the gang hauled her into the back room. Evidently, he thought your sister would make a dandy hostage. I intervened before Martha suffered more than slight bruising and saw her back to school. Never guessed that I removed the bastard's blood from her with a spell." His mouth tilted. "Your sister has as much pluck as you ever did. Called them dragons." He raised a hand as Hurst opened his mouth.

"Allow me to finish. Your sister was not hurt, but I did spend considerable time with her alone. And Sir Belvedere's lady saw us on the street. You know how she embroiders her gossip. She'll say we had an assignation. If that tale becomes common knowledge, Martha will be compromised. People are perfectly capable of saying I took advantage."

Then Brinston said the unthinkable. "I am prepared to offer marriage, though it's a damn shame your intrepid sister should be forced into a marriage that might not be to her liking."

"I would have no objection to you as a brother-in-law," Hurst said, knitting his brows. "You're one of my closest friends. How could I object? I agree, your reputation could make it look bad. However, Martha shouldn't be pushed into wedlock at the point of Lady Belvedere's tongue. She's just leaving school, for God's sake."

"Martha deserves a season and the chance to be the reigning toast before she chooses a husband." Brinston slammed the empty bottle on the table.

Hurst finished his brandy with a flourish. "I know your opinion of arranged marriages."

"Those appalling alliances should be banned." Brinston's chin elevated. "They are the ones that turn out licentious. Having witnessed my parents together, I believe common attraction the only valid basis for wedlock. Couples should have a minimum length of acquaintance of at least six months before they wed. Takes that long to know each other."

He stood and bowed as if to Almack's doyennes. "But you don't need to hear my rant again. I've said it often enough. There are situations where my convictions cannot hold. This may well be one." He took a deep breath. "At this time, I ask your formal permission to wed Martha if it becomes necessary."

"You ask my permission because you must?"

Lord Brinston said, "Never would I be unwilling. That would be to insult a lady who is the equal of any man in the land. In looks, manner, and spirit Martha is wholly delightful. No, if we wed, it will be entirely to my liking."

Deep inside, a little voice started chattering. No, it would not be to his liking, not at all, but sometimes there wasn't anything less to do. Not if one considered himself a true gentle knight.

THIS ISSUE'S AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: The spotlight this issue is on a very talented and prolific writer of “Erotic Fiction with an Edge”…Michael Barnette! Michael writes in several of my favorite sub-genres of erotica and erotic romance – m/m, F/m and BDSM just to name a few . His first out-and-out romance, APOCALYPSE DANCE (see PNR review this issue), is available now at Phaze. But I’ll let Michael tell you a little more about himself and his books:
“Michael Barnette grew up in the wilds of Miami, Florida where he enjoyed the nightlife and wide variety of cultures, but not the late night driveby shootings. Deciding on a change of pace, Michael moved to Athens, Georgia where he’s lived for several years.

Some of Michael’s favorite authors are David Drake (military SF), Linnea Sinclair (SF Romance), Jet Mykles (yaoi). By far my favorite character to write about is Bells. He’s a bit of a bad boy anti-hero and I’ve written about him the longest. He’s in two series, Immortal Heroes: The Apocalypse Dance saga and Through Neon Eyes.”
To learn more about Michael Barnette and his current and upcoming releases visit his sites at: http://www.michaelbarnette.com, http://www.myspace.com/michaelbarnette or join Michael’s Yahoo Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/immortal_heroes/ to stay abreast of news on his Immortal Heroes series and other work.
