I hope you all had a great holiday and continue to have a great time through the end of the year. The weather went from warm to downright cold here…finally. The temperature over the last few nights has been in the low teens. Just last week I was running around in light clothing and now I wear the winter cap, gloves, and lots of layers. Thanksgiving visitors did not get to enjoy the snow here but the ski resorts plan on being open by the first weekend in December. The weather change is fortunate for the community.

Yesterday I awoke to a stunning sight. The wet weather iced all the trees and foliage. As the sun rose, it created a glimmering winter wonderland. Everything sparkled—the trees, the plants, the roads, and the surface of the lake. It took my breath away.

Being home for the winter allows me to ponder what direction to focus my talents--and pet parenting education is where I believe I will go. Animals are abandoned and dumped every day for behavior problems. If people got the education early and learned how to properly plan for a pet, how to socialize a companion animal, got them into school early, and took them out on adventures into different environments--the pet households would be happy and the pets would stay home instead of getting dumped.

In the meantime, I’ve also been working at redoing my website and getting the “Blessing of the Animals” website up and running. What are your plans for the New Year?

3. Critter Chronicles

I had a doggie delinquent arrive for boot camp last month and spent half the month working with him. The poor little Catahoula (breed of dog) was not socialized and is very phobic because it was not socialized. The damage that irresponsible breeders do to animals impacts their entire lives…and this is one example.

The first few days were spent getting the dog simply to walk without startling or panicking. Down by the lakeshore he freaked at the tiny waves of the lake. Anything that moved scared him and he often vomited from fear.

This particular canine was so petrified that it took almost a week of work so he could get to the point where he could learn, but once he began he became responsive. The good news is that after two weeks he is much improved. He loves traveling in the crate to a new location and enjoys school.

His owner met with me for a briefing. Also because I had to train her! It was great to have her express amazement at the change in the dog. As an animal trainer and therapist I’d like to see more progress. I used a couple of alternative remedies with this animal and believe the critter should be a home body. He is going to get periodic lessons to keep him moving forward.

I like happy endings...
