The "Whenever Newsletter" containing the wit and wisdom of LDS author Susan Law Corpany is put out several times a year, but not on any set schedule. You will find the stories behind the stories, excerpts from works in progress, humorous insights, ideas for how to avoid doing housework. In other words--whatever and whenever. (Just a touch of rebellion.) Subscription is free and free from the contraint of a publishing schedule, because after all, writers are under enough deadlines. Enjoy!

Newsletter Dated: 6/1/2006 1:55:36 AM

First, let me thank all of you who responded to the Meridian interview. Because of the overwhelming response, they have asked me to write a twice-monthly column. (I hope to continue to have a good response even when I am not giving away something free.) So Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

If any of you missed the interview, you can find it here:

That interview has also led to an opportunity to write a column for "Mormon Momma." It is entitled "Parenting Outside the Box." Many of us belong to stepfamilies or are single parents, or just don't fit the mold somehow, and this column is for those whose families are outside the norm.

To those of you who are waiting for your free books, many of them are already on the way. Because I am sending out over 300 books, it was necessary for me to use Media Mail, which means they are floating over the ocean and will arrive in four to six weeks. This will allow you plenty of time to catch up on everything else in your life so that when the book arrives, you can put your feet up, get some Mrs. Field's Cookies and enjoy!

Since I will be traveling soon and ending up in Utah at the end of the trip, some of the books will be mailed from Utah at the end of June. According to my calculations, they could actually get to you sooner if I do it that way.

In March I had the chance to go the the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop. My husband had just gone on a trip to Israel, and one of my friends asked me if I was taking an equivalent trip. She was not impressed when I said "Yes, I'm going to Dayton, Ohio." What can I say? I prefer a location with a little less unrest. It was three days full of hanging out with funny people. Dave Barry was the keynote speaker. He was great! I came home with many humor books, which was distressing, because I am once again chipping away at my higher education, and when you are married to one of your professors, he basically knows if you are studying or not. Most of them fit nicely inside the textbooks, though, and despite the distraction, I did well in the two classes I took last semester.

I highly recommend to all the ladies "How to Remodel a Man" by W. Bruce Cameron. It is funny stuff. I found a website that carries pink tools specifically made for women and gave a set of those along with that book as a wedding shower gift to a friend of mine who recently got married.

Tim Bete has written a great book called "In the Beginning There Were No Diapers." His style of humor is very palatable. I especially enjoyed his chapter on how to change a diaper in an airplane restroom. I was in flight while I read it, and that made it even more amusing. He is a Christian writer and I enjoyed his insights and style and would recommend this book. I plan on giving a copy to my stepson, who is a new father.

I was not brave enough to be one of the attendees who signed up for the stand-up comedy night. I think most of them had a little "liquid courage" beforehand. The Sprite just didn't do it for me. Sometimes I have been introduced to someone and they remark that I am funny, and as soon as someone says that, I find it very difficult to be funny. I am sure that is what would have happened.

I met a lot of newspaper columnists and came home determined to try and get a column going somewhere. It feels good that I have managed to accomplish that, and I am looking forward to the experience and opportunity.

One evening Erma's husband and children were the guests of honor and were doing a question and answer session. My favorite story of the evening was from her son who teaches elementary school. He said he had asked his mother to come to his class and talk about writing, give the kids some pointers, tell them about the importance of spelling, etc. He said he gave her very clear instructions about what he wanted. He said when the time came, she stood up in front of the class and said, "Is there anything any of you want to know about Mr. Bombeck?" Then she proceeded to take up the whole time telling embarrassing stories about him. A woman after my own heart!

I look forward to the chance I will have to meet some of you along the way in my travels. I will be checking e-mail sporadically and will be back in Hawaii on July 7.

Thanks again for your support. If any of you would prefer not to receive this newsletter, follow the instructions to unsubscribe or send me an e-mail at, and I will take you off the list.
