When life gets so bad where you just have enough to live off, you are now at your very last when you have no heat in the house and no heat in the car.

Inside my home the thermometer reads in the dark at 7 degrees above zero
The wind is whistling outside at 30 miles per hour with a wind chill
          Of 25 degrees below
The kerosene heater is cold and the refill can is bone dry
and the needle is locked on empty and I let out a cry
Lord, Lord what am I going to do?
I am flat broke with no one to turn to
Mom and the children are bundle close under a ton of blankets in one room
How will we escape our fate with delivery from this doom?
I would start the car to warm our bones as a momentary treat
It is futile because the car has no heat
This double jeopardy of two evils will go how far
No heat in the house and no heat in the car.
The clothes I dress myself with for the day of work are hard with freeze
They are hard to put on over the ones I slept in as they are pulled over
          My knees
No need to warm the car before I depart
I kiss my family goodbye and bid they take heart.
My drive to work is at least 10 miles per hour over the speed limit
I didn’t see the cop hidden and here he comes Gol darn it
He takes his time writing the ticket as I freeze my behind off
The car starts to stutter and cough.
Around the corner is where I work and soon this frozen body will be warm
I rush inside and to my alarm
It is as cold as when I left home and with rage I am filled
My first thoughts are did some S.O.B. forget to pay the bill.
I don’t want to work, talk, cry or go back home
Somehow I feel I am in the twilight zone
How much misfortune can a person have in one day?
I thought it was bad enough not to have any heat in the house
And none in the car and for work I did pray.
I am ready to explode as I carry this load
With a sad heart I hit the road
Headed for home to greet
In the car and at home there is no heat.
No heat at home
No heat in the car I cry
Take out my blanket and lay it in my casket
          I’m ready to die.
The toils of life has won the war
          My insurance is paid!

Great comtemplative piece. I have been there a few times before...

Be always safe,

Oh this is so dreadful, but you wrote this poem so excellently in the midst of the cold and shivers. I hope it gets heated soon and the job gets to be as rewarding, just keep hoping.

Praying for you,
