THE QUEST

Swirling petals of crimson rose so red

Were droplets of blood from his head

Fallen leaves surround his feet

Earthy scents released so sweet

Barren fingers branch ever upward

Swaying gently to music unheard

Autumn moon with a ghostly light

Displays the path he’ll ride tonight

Upon a large black beast he rides

Wearing a tattered cloak that flies behind

Thundering hoofs with a deafening sound

Lightening cracks as they beat the ground

Racing the night before sunrise

A life by dark was his sacrifice

Claiming lost souls is his quest

Those spirits who’ve gone unblessed

A wasted life that no longer reigns

Fodder is the price they must pay

Heart pounding and nostrils flared

The beast knows he’ll get his fare

With snorts of fire he paws the night

Eagerly outrunning the coming daylight

Just one last soul he must lay claim

Is this headless horseman’s bloody game

Faster and faster he urges his black steed

His swiftness he knows is guaranteed

For they both will reap their fair share

Only a dispirited heart would bring to bear

His solitary journey he makes only at night

Ending his quest with the first ray of light.

Dee
