Growth is always happening,I believe, for all of us,but sometimes it's hard for me to detect it.I have learned to look for the small subtle changes that I experience.

Growth Spurts

How do I recognize a growth spurt?

Can I tell because of the hurt,

The physical or mental pain?

What lets me know I have a gain

Rather than another loss?

How do I tell when there is less dross

In my heart, soul and mind?

What actions tell me I am more refined

Now than I was a week, a month,or a year ago?

How can I tell when I grow?

Growing spiritually and emotionally is much like looking in the mirror every day and trying to detect our own aging. The one difference is that while we all age with time, we don't all grow--except grow old. It occurs to me, however, that if one is committed enough to look for growth, then inherently there must be growth. The very act of looking suggests itself as evidence of growth. My dear friend Jeanette Cooper (below) makes an interesting observation that I can buy into: If we're making mistakes, we're probably growing. Man oh man, with that standard, it's obvious that I must be growing so fast I can hardly keep up with myself. Oh! She did add a caveat: "...if we learn from them." (Strike my previous conclusion about growing fast.) A very provocative write, Barbara! Richard

This poem touches on some in-depth thinking. I think the mistakes we make in life are a good measure of our growth--if we learn from them.
