Is it the things we know deep inside to be true that upset us and indignates us the most when they're pointed out to us?

One sentence
uttered half awake
started a pity party
of righteous magnitude.

Now your words are arrows
and I'm the enemy
upon wich you wage war.

Turning cold shoulder
indignantly walking off
into moral stance.

Right then cowboy,
your mind moves faster
than your shadow.

And I thought I just uttered
harmless words.

Clearly your mind
has a mind of it's own.

Sometimes the truth is hard to swallow though it is also more favorable to accept ones fault and move forward upon the realization of the truth... a very nice work of this exposed subject...

this is superb Elisabeth!
Takes me back in time
when someone called me ignorant
I stood for a second and asked why
(as I initially felt I was being insulted)
oddly though...I was being educated
as that word alone has many perceptions

Ah the tongue can be the ugliest organ in the body, Elisabeth, and can inflict incurable injuries...the ole 'sticks 'n' stones...' rhyme was meant to assuage, not to be the truth.
I love your delivery and the impact of your words.

IF we'd only think before we speak but who does. Even if we do misinterpretation is bound to happen. What you say is not always what the other person hears. And as your poem tells, few want who we really are seen. I really enjoy this poem.

Very true, Elisabeth; it is wise to think before uttering words. Love and best wishes,

This is very powerful and so wise!

Even our own poems can make us think...hmmm, I do that too!
(I just noticed the chameleon in myself and had to laugh after writing a poem called Chameleon!)

Blessings,
Christine

Unfortunately this is true for so many of us, feelings, emotioins, upbringing, past history all combine to how we react when we feel, even if unjustly, that we are being verbally attacked. You captured your subject well here...
