Training for War

THE-END-OF-THE-LINE
(Or Children’s Hospital 1963)

My room was at the
End-of-the-Line
Past the room full of
White children (next to the playroom of course)
Past the room full of
Hispanic Children
Past the room full of
Black Children

My room was the one
With the bed
With the metal bars
And the foot strap
For tying
Mythological creatures
From a bygone era
To the bed

Time for blood work
Lets get out the sheet
Roll er’ up like a sausage
Stick needles in the ankle bone

Took just as many nurses
To tie down to the bed
With the metal bars
“THESE children are very strong you know”
We have to keep them tied least they get out & wreck some havoc

That is how my training begain
At the age of 2 ½
Fighting forces 4 Times bigger than myself
Who were always trying
To keep me down
Tied up or rolled up

Two weeks later
Time to go
All the testing was done
To determine
Which type of mythological
Creature I was:

The verdict went like this:

“Years ago, in many cultures, children like these grew up to be respected and looked
highly upon. But not today.”

Myself and my well-trained army left
To pick up the battle
At a later date

This was a Children’s Hospital in the USA (not China)
But if I were to tell you when/where – Medical records would disappear
Don’t you see – IT NEVER HAPPENED
The Godamm dwarf just keeps on having delusions

Interesting poem, I never experienced war but the descriptions contained in your poem are touching.

I taste the salty tear. I hear the voice of the mountain. Love, Anne
