I Survived
how do you make it in this world, I was asked
I'm a Black woman…I’ve had to survive the struggle

most of my life

…had to make something outta little bit of nothing
survived through premature birth, a changing world,

learning who I really was

in this skin

I survived

I survived peer pressure, teasing, taunting, budding bosoms,
fuller hips

survived along with the rest of the world through the Vietnam war, watching brothers

fight and die

for a cause not their own

I survived

I survived night scenes in different cities, red light and waistline
parties in basements, discos and cabarets

I survived

I survived sundown picnics, late nights at the waterfront, changes
In the city, the 70s, 80s, 90s and now

I survived the drinking, and experimental druggings that peer pressure and discovery causes

but

I survived

I survived an at-first inseparable love affair/marriage

then

one relationship after another, one relationship after another, one relationship after another

but

I survived

survived all that life has given

how am I making it in this world

I’m still a Black woman

still surviving
