Duel of Honour

© Megan Lutz

They dance under the sea of faces,
Swords drenched in blood,
Torn clothes,
Do they dare to look up,
To the eyes that hold them captive,
For her one of them will die,
For her hand in marriage…

Circle each other once more,
The crowd calling for more blood,
The princess wrinkles her nose in distaste,
As once more, a jab is thrown,
Steel hitting bone,
An anguish cry could be heard from miles around,
Pure blood spilling out on the damp floor,
The battle continues…

For the love of the princess,
Who sits high on her throne,
Lights dancing off her coppery hair,
Breasts heaving in excitement,
Who will win her,
The person who she loves with all her heart,
Or the person who she has known her since she was born,
Who is worthy of becoming her husband,
Is the battle cry,
As blood is once more spilt on the earth floor.

Dancing the sacred duel,
Only one will walk out of the arena,
The question will be,
Will it be the boyfriend,
Or the brother?

Reflection by Donna Lagone

Why did Rosie on her death bed asked me to promise to always keep her silver mirror in the family. What silver mirror and why?..
