Face in the Rainbow

I had an ALS patient who said, "I heard you write poetry?" After hearing a few of my poems, he said, "I want you to do something for me. I am going to give you the phrase "Face in the Rainbow" and I want you to use it in a poem. For months he would ask me if I had anything yet, but I just didn't like anything I came up with until after he passed in front of his wife and I. I took a moment to drive to a park, cry and write "that" poem he had been asking about on the day of his passing, 07-07-08.

Today, today I saw what you wanted me to see I saw it through the eyes of my grief

Some might not understand, how on the day of your passing I could see such a sight

But I saw it, saw it even  as I cried

I saw your face in the rainbow just like you wanted all to see

And although most won't see it now or even imagine how,

Through my tears and the bright sunshine

I closed my eyes and saw your face through the many colors of the rainbow

Smelt the freshness of the rain                     The release of your pain

And the smile on your face

Having passed through Heaven's Gate
