Bogota Backscatter
by Frank Stephenson

Many of the same characters as appear in "An Unlikely Journey," but the scene is the violent nation of Colombia shortly after the devastating earthquake of January 1999..

The Split

All things were divided
The car to you, furniture to me,
An impartial judge decided.
It was fair as it could possibly be.
The house for me, the equity for you
Each detail worked out in its turn.
The children’s time shared by two.
Support based on what we could earn.
All was sorted neatly in place.
Resolved with kindly expediency.
All that was left for us to face.
Loneliness divided acquiescently.

sad when the unity of love that brings people together is divided by the strains of an impartial decision outside our own control...

Your words perfectly capture the hollow resignation one feels in that situation. This is really good, dear.

Excellent poem about a sad situation. The last line is the best. This one is timeless.
