From the poetry book called
"Wake up and sing."
Has not yet been published.
The poem and the book was copywritten 2003.

UP!, FROM THE MIGHTY BROWN - SCALP GROUNDS, BLACK - FOLKS NATURAL - HAIR GROWS OUT JUST LIKE COTTON.

I'VE PICKED IT WITH THE AFRO - PICK,
I'VE RAKED IT WITH THE WIDE - TOOTHED COMB,
I'VE BRAIDED IT TOGETHER, LAYING STRAND ACCROSS STRAND, MAKING IT THE PRETTIEST & FINEST - HAIR DESIGNS MADE BY HAND!

UP!, FROM THE MIGHTY BROWN - SCALP GROUNDS, BLACK - FOLKS NATURAL - HAIR GROWS OUT JUST LIKE COTTON.

I'VE TURNED IT & I HAVE BEAT - IT DOWN, TILL IT LAY FLAT,
I'VE BURNED IT I'VE, EVEN SEWN - IT FOR GOD'S SAKE...,
ONTO OTHER HAIR, THAT WAS FAKE!
I'VE STRETCHED - IT OUT, TILL IT WAS SLICK,
                    I'VE DREADED - IT - CLEAN DRY, & PILED - IT UP ON MY HEAD, A MILE.....................................................................HIGH!

UP!, FROM THE MIGHTY BROWN - SCALP GROUNDS, BLACK - FOLKS NATURAL - HAIR GROWS OUT JUST LIKE COTTON.

I'VE RELAXED - IT, UNTIL IT GOT TOO TIRED AND  PASSED - OUT,
I'VE CHEMICAL - LYED IT, STRETCHED IT & MADE IT SLICK,  THEN...IT FELL RIGHT OUT, BECAUSE IT GOT SICK,
I'VE DRUGGED - IT SO MUCH, THAT IT LOST IT'S SMOOTH - SOFT TOUCH, AND I SOON FORGOT MY - OWN HAIR'S NATURAL WAVE, AND HARDLY REMEMBERED WHERE IT FIRST CAME!

UP!, FROM THE MIGHTY BROWN - SCALP GROUNDS, BLACK - FOLKS NATURAL - HAIR GROWS OUT JUST LIKE COTTON. I TRIED TO HIDE SHAME & THE REST OF MY FOLLY, BUT MY SCALP NOW CALLS ME:

                     QUEEN " POLEYESTER - POLLY ' !!!...

hello Michelle...sorry took so long to reply, but thanks for your comments regarding my hair poem.I was just learning how to do this computer stuff, just ran into this page by accident, read some of your fav-writers, I like Dostoyevsky too! I read his work all the time while on my 2-5year recoup from brain surgery when I was 17yr old. Reading is theraputic for me, writing songs & poems calms me too.take care and may God bless and be with you always...sincerely,Georgia M McDowell...health is wealth!

:) I can relate to this because I always say I have "wild woman" hair- it's wiry and hard to tame, but I like it that way, lol! I also liked the humor and seriousness of this-because isn't it a shame we put ourselves and our hair through so much for some silly fashion?? I also liked the repetition of certain lines as it gave a feel of past times as well as the style being reminiscent of one of my favorite poets work, Paul Laurence Dunbar. Enjoyed.
