A lover recalls his enchantress...

"All my poetry falls way short, just as does my prose
When i sit down to describe my desert rose

O' enchantress, my enchantress
In the spring of my life i had met her

You'd be just as mesmerised, if you had but the luck to lay on her your eyes
You'd call her a bewitching siren, a consummate seductress

One who knew no praise was adequate to capture her allure
No poem was lucid to picture her essence - majestic, striking and pure

Never before did i behold anything like her beauty
Nor drunk as intoxicating a nectar any

Her body struck me as an ellora sculpture
A deer's playful jaunt, a peacock's dance, and a gaze magical..

Her gait a melody, and her voice the most inebriating fragrance
A beauty infused with poetry, she often sent me into an instant trance

A siren she was, enveloped in opium from head to toe
What she brought to my ever pliant mind was a fragrant moonlight,
a smiling flower blooming at the soft whisper of spring,
sun's first rays eager to touch and feel dawn's dewy skin..

Her body sculpted as if to bewitch,
Beauty infused with poetry, a sight hard for even the mighty-willed to resist!

Her silhouette reminded me of a splendid sculpture,
Of milky marble, bergamot and heady sandalwood

When i looked into her eyes, i could hardly avert my gaze
And kept looking at them, till i forgot my nights from days

Are they eyes, or shall i call them my dreams?
Are they glances, or gently piercing arrows cloaked in luxurious reams?

Are they eyes or pots of exotic wine?
Are they laser beams to render me immobile, or shackles to entwine?

When she lifted her gaze, well, it was indeed a prayer
When she lowered her gaze, i'd melt as nothing seemed shyer
When she lifted her gaze to lower again, my good lord, it was coquetry
When she lowered her gaze to lift again, 't was sheer audacity!

In those eyes i beheld the velvety sky and the silky earth
Celestial, other worldly, kohl lined.. those eyes breathed life into me
Commanding, cajoling and coaxing me, pleading me to yield
those eyes .. for them i wouldn't hesitate to even die

O' enchantress, my enchantress
In the spring of my life, I had met her.."

Inspired by a sufi poem in urdu..
