Penance

Time

Your wretched tentacles stretch beyond imagination

Dangling life like a carrot before our very eyes

Only to strike with your cruel stick

Feeling its sting

As we reach out seeking to touch the prize

Touch we must

Like moths to the flame

Consumed by the madness that is our existence

Until the carrot falls from sight

And the stick delivers its final blow

Certainly not what I expected when I read the title.
Interesting and SO sad. By any chance, are you ever called a pessimist?

Dark and deep. The life of a human can be torture for we can't see the point of it all. But maybe if we did, we wouldn't learn what we need to learn? Powerful, Patrick...

The cruel hand of fate or whatever it is called just keeps that darned carrot in front of us and you just can't resist trying to grab. Love it. Liz

The stick, ah yes the stick, on the ass, or is it a donkey, but still a little persuation can go a long way. Ithacoras, did he ride an ass, he went for the light too, didn't he. I'm so confused.
Good one Patrick!~ Jasmin Horst

A quote from page 529 of "Becoming':
Opening his eyes, taking a deep breath.
Since he was fifteen God had dangled that carrot in front of him and always pulled it away…
But No! Nothing was going to happen to stop it now…
Nothing!

Clever write, Patrick....and we'll all chase that carrot until that final blow. Only a small portion of that sand in the hourglass belongs to us...enjoyed. Thanks!
