A Poem By Mario Watts

Imagine a world where hearts are never broken

A world where love is true – never false.

Imagine a child growing up never having any fears or tears

Now imagine that child watching painfully as their parents are taken by God

Then imagine that child growing up in a cruel world all alone

Imagine a sista’ fresh and new

Who starts doing things that only a whore would do

Sellin’ her candy on a street corner to every stranger she meets

Now imagine that sista’ carrying something new

Carrying a child that would give her something to live for

Then she leaves the baby in a metal box with the rest of the trash to starve and die

Not realizing that it’s a baby not a thing

Imagine a woman in love with a man she would die for

Only to find out that he’s been sleeping around with a man

And brings her death in the form of three letters…AIDS.

Imagine a mother sitting by a window crying as the rain strikes the window seal

Crying cause her little man is out making deals

She’s praying to God to keep him safe

Then there’s a call on the phone that interrupts her faith

Telling her to come to the morgue to identify the one she carried inside her for nine months

Imagine a world where no babies die

Even when we send them off to war

Fighting for a freedom man made – a lie

Imagine a world without suffering or greed

A place where government provides for the people’s need

Imagine a letter, to the “Man”

Reminding them that killing another man was a sin,

And that they started every single war that our people’s been in.

Now imagine all this was just fiction

And there was no such thing as affliction

Imagine a world were people let God be the judge.

Now imagine never having to imagine…
