This is 1 of 6 works that was written by my son, who is presently incarcerated. I have submitted them as a request from one of my Den Buddies who really enjoyed Asa's first work that I posted back in August and wanted to hear more from him. Enjoy.

High waves wash fish ashore onto the beaches from the ocean.

Many of the fish, using every ounce of strength in their bodies

struggle to reach the waters again but, there

are a few that lie on the sands of the beach

...completely still, filled with joy...

so overwhelmed with happiness

that on this very day

they have been

chosen

to go

to

a

better place

....and life no longer remains a struggle. Joyce and Asa, I read these poems backwards...beginning with the last and working my way to the first. I think, maybe I had no intention of reading them all...but I did...not out of necessity or being kind...but because Asa's work drew me in...made me want to continue to read. Asa, are gifted with your words...and your ability to express yourself...and although it may not be pleasant...your are part of a learning experience...maybe not in the way that you had hoped...but for now...it is how it is. Eventually...your life will change...for better...or worse...and you hold the key...we all have the freedom to choose. But from reading your work...Asa, I think you will come from this a much stronger and wiser person...who will have the ability to help many.

My absolute favorite. It feels like letting go and trusting God. Inspired, I am sure by God.

Your son is truly gifted! This poem brought tears to my eyes... I was once lay on that shore; but as I lay there, waiting... my attention was drawn to a wave that suddenly swept me back into the ocean; and here I joyfully swim, faithfully, with my attention focused on Him until my time to go to that better place... Sometimes He just wants our attention... Blessings, JBS

...and no longer will they struggle to swim against currents again, unique poem!

This poem is deep and well crafted. I have often asked, "If Heaven exists and is such a great place, why do we not all just end this misery and go there now?" I suppose many people of faith will answer it is because there is work to be done and that we are here to train for eternity. In that sense, the poem strikes me as rather morbid and fatalistic. That it is written by someone who is incarcerated is understandable. Nevertheless, I would have liked to see the fish struggle to return to the ocean -- to get one more swim. As Ole Blue Eyes crooned, "Each time I find myself flat on my face, I pick myself up and get back in the race ..."
