Spiritual mood changes can happen quickly, if you let them.

The woman in a leopard skin jacket
now with legs crossed, sits at the front corner
of the wooden ceiling church.  Her hair
is long and faded blond.  Her glasses are oggly black.
She has lost two husbands.

As I wonder about her age,
the pastor wakes me with a joke about how few of us have jobs.  Into the hymn we're singing.
"What is Man, that Thou art mindful of him."
My heart soars from the basement of spidery thoughts
about how unworthy I am in this God-forsaken town,
to the top of Himalayas, my spirit round and rosy again.

No longer do I dwindle to sub-human status.
I'm a child of the Lord again, as always.

Inner peace and joy are mine.

It is nice, Kathy to lose oneself in remembering who we should be honoring and shedding ourselves of the concerns of the world.

Kathy, having not occupied a small corner of the old church pew
for more years than I can recount, you got me to thinking with
this one. Yes, well done. -gene.

Wow. This one was powerfully penned, but hard on the eyes: had to strain to read. Older eyes, you know. LOL Sad, when going to church has lost its joy...well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Very good, Kathy, a poignant write about what it is to feel down even in church, and then have that inner joy and peace reach in to pull you up. You helped me too, especially with your thoughtful comments about the connections of our two poems. I found your thoughts on the woman in the leopard skin coat interesting...Jerry
