This is set in a form of my creation called the Nocturne 1-4-3. The Nocturne is composed of three stanzas…a single line, followed by a quatrain, ending with a tercet. It must contain a reference to night, whether subtle or overt and should have a surreal quality. It may be metered or not. Rhyme may or may not be used.
It may also be inverted, beginning with the tercet, followed by the quatrain and ending with the single line.
As I have done with this piece, two or more Nocturnes may be linked to form a longer piece of work.

Nocturne 6-Refections
Outside, rain steadily falls.
Between the pages of a book
I find a dry, faded, rose
And the ghost of its fragrance calls
To me from yesterdays mirror…
Reflections of what once was,
Of whispered words, soft caresses
And the scent of a single, red rose…
I surprised her with a rose by the sea…
The cresting waves kept our secret
Guarding it within mists and spray
Where tiny, prismatic glows
Were seeds from which rainbows grow…
The waves ran over sun-warmed sands,
The cool waters, now warmed, sighed,
Reluctant to leave the moment…
Within a simplicity of song,
We slow danced to the rhythms,
Singing to one another
Of once and future springs,
Capturing the moment in memory…
As I drift into sleep
I find myself humming
As tears fall gently like rain.

Evocative as lines in ancient poetry, your words move on to sing the song of creatures, including the human. And, as words move my emotions I want to linger and learn to sing. - Bill |
