I look around at the human sea
I ask, what have we become
Where is the love that used to be?
It marches now to a different drum.
We dare not smile or cast an eye
Or nod in greeting to another
Eyes downcast arms held to our sides
Hide our feelings from our Lovers.
We live our lives in abject fear
Lest a smile or nod be mistaken
We cannot show that we really care
Friendship is gone all but forsaken.
We turn our heads as we hurry by
Ignore the lonely and the lost
A passing thought, we nod and sigh.
We do not stop to count the cost.
That gentle touch, a warming smile.
Now lost in meanings sensual
Affection is hidden, seen as guile
And a hug is seen as being unusual.
How you long to feel their touch.
To share your love without condition
Friendship’s hug you miss so much
Is lost for fear of violation.
Maybe one day, I don’t know when
The fears that drive us all apart
Will be cast aside and maybe then
A love that is natural will rule our hearts.
