Elixir of Illusions

Our world is filled with dying souls in a prison of drugs and alcohol. Someone very dear to me was in my thoughts when I wrote this poem.

Alone. Alone with the voices and the cruel truth,
Clamoring thoughts that mock and sneer
Gone is the beauty of a life once filled
With joy and light.

It seemed to happen overnight, the descent
Into the shadows and alleyways of sin.
“Stay with me,” the siren calls, “Drink at my lips until you are
Impervious to another sound.”

Eagerly the needle is filled,
From the vial of Satan’s brew
The defenders of reason cry aloud
But the vulnerable vein has no defense

For the poison flows into the blood,
The stuff of illusion and myth.
“You must have me,” the deceiver cries
Without me, you have no life.”

And the soul shrinks back behind the bars,
Made prisoner by nothing but lies.

At midnight Paul and Silas sang,
Though beaten with many stripes
Deep within the walls of stone,
Behind the gates of iron

The angel stood with power and might,
and bade them, “Follow me.”
The chains fell off, the gates opened wide
The demons howled in fright.

Don’t give up, Oh dying soul
You are not forgotten
Truth stands before you now,
Arrayed in shining white

Just follow where He bids you go,
Through the gates of iron,
Beyond the dark and dreary walls
Of the prison bars of lies.

A Glorious day of beauty awaits,
In the arms of the Father of Lights.

Good reading and I guess my husband found this eternity on Aug 17 07. He is missed but reading poetry like this helps bring back the sentiments and find him again and know he is with his God in a new home in heaven. I believe and hope others will be led to believe by reading your poetry too. Lois C

Wise advise as anyone on drugs can kick the habit but it takes a strong will. I knew a man who was a habitual drinker, gambled the families fortunes away with this addiction, was hooked on drugs, but happy to say he conqured each addiction and is back with his family leading a very productive life. That was 20 years ago and he is still clean to this day. It can be done.

hardhitting and forboding write; good message within its contents! there is NOTHING good about alcohol or drugs, and you capture the helplessness one feels when they know people who are captives of drug or alcohol abuse! all you can do is pray that they can be delivered of this evil before it is too late!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in tx., karen lynn. :(
