another year has passed...i wonder why they pass so fast now
as a child i moaned because they didnt pass fast enough
then suddenly i woke ups and my hair was gray...my body creaky
too bad i didnt seem to enjoy life while i was young...where was i

now that i am old and gray...i can see the follies of my mind
i can also see the glories i almost missed...time saved me
maybe if i use the time left to me wisely...i can learn to appreciate
too bad i didnt seem to enjoy life while i was young...where was i

i look back at all the travels and journies of life
some i smile at...some i just shudder...others make me cry
but i now realize that it was my life...it made me who i am
too bad i didnt seem to enjoy life while i was young...where was  i

i think about how i just seemed to survive...or time passed me by
then i realize...i wasnt alone...so did the rest of the world
there really wasnt time then to watch ourselves grow
too bad i didnt seem to enjoy life while i was young...where was i

we all spent our youth getting educated...then we got married
oh yes...then came the babies...now there were more to support
no wonder we didnt seem to enjoy our lives...we were too busy
too bad i didnt seem to enjoy life while i was young...where was i

all is not really lost...now we can enjoy what life is all about
stop to smell the roses...listen to the birds...as well as see them
reap the time given to us as we stroll down the golden path
too bad i didnt seem to enjoy life while i was young...where was i

I think it is such a terrible shame that the only time we have to step back and truly take stock is when we are already at the wrong end of the sequence.

"youth is wasted on the young" ...

well crafted reflective journey ...

You are describing the past so many women have taken. Unfortunately, it seems necessary for the human society to continue. I loved my youth and took full advantage of it even though I didn't marry and raise children. Where was I? Everywhere I wanted to be and I still write stories and novels based on the times I had that will never come again because those times and those situations are long past but well remembered.

I feel the same way, Mary Etta! When we were young life was so busy we never really stopped to think about how fast it was going by. And in today's world it's moving even faster....truly enjoyed this!

Beautiful poem and wise as well. To live here and now is the key to happiness.

Your words touch on a timeless and universal theme of this life/world, Mary Etta... ...and they provide substance to reflect upon. Thank you. Love and best wishes,

I like that elliptical restive quality about your poem and its title, its ending with everything up in the air, like... still, and all, you manage to capture a strong sense of awareness, self-confidence in a tentative kind of manner... the paradoxical ambivalence so sure of being unsure is kind of, well, cathartic... it's like that definition of faith an old psychology teacher of mine once heaved at me with a tepid temerity: faith is honest doubt... and he was right, too, in his own, glass is half-empty kind of way... to a point... where was i
