Adam's Eve

A bit of soppy sentimentality this morning in honor of Christmas Eve!

Adam was a boy of six
His family was quite poor
His Mother raised him on her own
Since Dad walked out the door.

The fights they'd had were frightening
He didn't know what to think
But Mom was quite unhappy that
Dad spent all they had on drink.

But that was over a year ago
And things had settled down
Mom had a job cleaning homes
In the "rich" side of the town.

As Christmas time came closer
His Mom made things quite clear
No money for a Christmas tree
Or presents there'd be this year.

Adam wanted to try and make
Christmas special for his Mother
He knew how hard it was for her
She'd loved him like no other.

When Christmas Eve his Mom came home
And opened up the door
Adam stood proudly by his gift to her
It sat there on the floor.

A tiny pine tree for his Mom
He'd decorated with his treasures
Red berries, cones, paper star on top
His Mother cried with pleasure.

"What a gift you've given me my love!"
As she took off her coat and mittens
Then from her pocket she handed him
A tiny orange kitten.

She told Adam that she'd found it
Huddled under a bush all alone
She knew it would be a great gift for him
And nice company around their home.

As Adam hugged his kitten close
He said "I do believe
This Christmas gift's the best I've ever had and I'll name her little Eve"........
