I’ll Remember Your Smile
To my friend Cory
I liked your quiet ways, your manner of speech, the way you entered a room, your big brown eyes, your gentle smile.
I liked the way your yellow hair, touched your shoulders, your tranquil ways, your graceful laughter, your clever humor.
You read every word I’ve ever written, I can’t forget. I liked the way you pretended to believe I’d cooked too much that night,
I knew you often went without, but you stood tall, I never heard you cry. I liked the way you loved your children, your home, your cats,
I liked the way you greeted me, always with a luscious smile – your face so bright, but your brown eyes told a different story,
I wish I’d read it carefully, I wish I’d asked, I wish I’d done things differently, I didn’t know how. I close my eyes now, and I can still see your smile.
Carmen Ruggero .2004
The above doesn't even pretend to be a poem. I penned my thoughts as they came to me. My friend, and co-worker Cory, and her little girl Jenna were both stabbed to death yesterday in their home during a robbery attempt. A suspect has been apprehended.
This family is so impoverished; they can hardly put food on the table. I don't know what this man needed so much, to justify killing them both, and with such brutality.
Cory would have been 27 years old in April; Jenna would have been five, in May.
May they rest in peace.

You did more than "pen your thoughts". You penned your heart, memories, and soul with the loss of your friend and her daughter. It sent a shiver down my spine. The pen that you had placed in your had on that painful day, turned into a paintbrush, as you painted your friend's smile, right from your heart!
Stop into my den if you have a chance, I would love to hear your thoughts about my work. |

Carmen;
I'd like to write something to console you but there can be no consolation after such a senseless loss of life. There can be a tribute however to the the victims and you have done it well.

God bless Cory.
IT may have only been thoughts penned on paper, but what else really is a poem?
Seemed like a beautiful poem to me, and I loved it

Mercy, how horrible. What a nice tribute to her and what she stood for. Her soul certainly wasn't impoverished.

| Ah, ah, ah, I am so sorry to read about the very real tragedy behind this write, Carmen! So sorry, indeed! The rampant viciousness and callousness running amok in the world today, this undeclared war between the perceived "haves" and the "have-nots" is just getting bestial. And I mourn with you... |
