Comanche Father

Poem for a wonderful who passed too soon. He was wonderful to learn from.

Comanche Father

Comanche father I can’t speak memories of you

further than two years ago

only stories you laughed at as they were told;

antics of your struggling yester years.

Your silent silhouette could have told of history

with just a look at your face

your features, your strong proud face,

each line there a story of it’s own.

I would watch in awe, with the hairs

on my arms standing straight

as you danced the native steps to the beat of the drum

sounding the heartbeat of us all.

Your gentle voice spoke words of wisdom

in an irreplaceable tone

your never ending patience with us who wanted

to learn your ways of respect, to make

us stronger and pass on to our own.

Your smile and laughter, as you watched

me struggle and stumble as

you again told me with a chuckle, “Remember,

Be quiet, be still, listening is the way to learn”.

Some of my proudest moments

were when you spoke of me as your daughter

and you seemed quite proud

No prouder than I, your Comanche child.

Comanche father, even though I know

you would disapprove; I’d like to argue

with Creator, He took you way too soon.

I’ll have to remember, be quiet, be still

I’m listening Comanche Father,

I still have a lot to learn.

                                                                                                            for Johnny and Jackie Star

This is very very touching to me.
I lost my father this year, and I'm involved with the process of entering his world. My father's world was that of master poets and muscians- a fine world to explore with amazing inspiration.
The Comanche world I'm sure is worth a lifetime of exploration and celebration of such rich depth of understanding.
We don't live long enough to go to all the beautiful places there are.

Read with love and respect,

John
