The drum sends out a powerful beat
To clapping hands and stamping feet.
Electric strings call to swaying throng
Joyful voices echo with praise and song.
But faith is easy when the music’s sweet
And all your asked to follow is the rhythm of the beat.
But where will you be when the beat you hear
Is the tramping of feet as enemies draw near.
When voices are raised in anguish and pain
Will your faith endure?
Will your joy remain?
When the stamping feet and the full throated roar
Is, “Silence him, let him be heard no more”.
When the only strings are cords that bind,
When you stand alone, friends hard to find.
It’s a great place to be when it’s really grooving,
Upraised arms swaying and the body moving.
So pride not in crowded halls when your church really hops,
But be humbled by those who will stay –
When the music stops.
