So What is Our Love?

So What is Our Love?

So what is our love, my future wife?
That which gives me so much life.

Is it desire, a burning heat intense,
Or is it friendship, like none known since?

Could it be caring, and longing to please,
Or is it needing, to give our troubles ease?

Beyond lust it is, though lust is there,
For in the world, I see you everywhere.

A Summer’s sun that gives day its light,
Is but a reflection of your smile in my sight.

Like cool waters that run so deep,
Is the comfort you give when I cannot sleep.

The warmth of your arms in gentle embrace,
I feel always together is our rightful place.

Is it comfort we feel, free from stress,
That, and more, so we pass our tests.

Familiar we are, with each other, its true ,
And certitude we receive all our lives through.

The spark, the flame, burns in our heart,
Rekindled after long times spent apart.

Can I live without him, I hear you ask,
And to test that feeling is a hellish task.

Your misery tells you NO, like a blade to the heart,
Deep inside, you know, we can never part.

 Happiness unbridled and overwhelming strong,
That’s the feeling we have… together  we belong.

Your face, your eyes, your tender touch,
Are in my mind ever so much.

How do I know, you painfully cry,
With burning heart, and eyes cried dry…

Is it real, will it last, is it enough to save,
Will it carry me through, till I reach my grave?

Yes, my love, that and more…
For it stands the test of time forever more.

And still you ask, what of all the rest,
And I answer it stands, the test of tests.

Our love is strong, and will surely win,
For it has been assailed from without and within.

And still it grows, despite it all,
Unconquerable, and alive, it shall never fall.

Your body, your mind, but especially your heart,
Give me purpose now, as it did from the start.

To kiss away your tears, and dispel your aches,
Is my highest calling, whatever it takes.

To make you well, and tell you too,
There’s always lots of love and pride, in every thought of you.

So what is our love, my dream divine?
Quaking so scared upon the vine…

Is it all these things, perhaps even more,
Waiting there, just outside the door?

If I were an artist, I’d paint a picture clear,
My words are my palette, to illumine you, dear.

Enmeshed in each other we have become,
Entangled, embroiled, we did succumb.

We gave in to love, with purpose and hope,
These are the things that will let us cope.

Together we are One, apart we die,
As surely as the sun, in the evening sky.

But I do not fear the night, though lonely it seems,
For in my heart, I’m carried by our dreams.

Oh, Barbara, my love, we’ve come too far,
To live our lives as an ugly scar.

With fulfillment, and love, will ourselves complete,
For our bodies and hearts we shall always meet.

It’s not just your heart that I possess,
It’s your being, your essence, that I caress.

Oft were the times, and long denied,
Our union remains, as yet untied.

We have but to grab the strands and pull the knot,
To find the peace, the joy, that cannot be bought.

For our love lives, with a life of its own,
From the seeds of needs that were sown.

And from these seeds, a tree stands tall,
Defying winds and drought, it cannot fall.

Upon its branches, we decorate our lives,
Here, there, and everywhere, it yet survives.

Our love making transcends this outer world,
It draws our heart.... to “forever” we’re hurled.

No one could love me as you do,
And that’s just part of what clings me to you.

We’ve shared so many times, both good and bad,
And this is why this life... is the best we’ve had.

Alive we’ve become, from darkness and doubt,
Never again, can we live without.

I am you, and you are me, that much is clear,
Our rightful place together, is right here.

So what is our love, my lady so fine?
Could it be more than us… something divine?

YES! I cry from the heart of my soul,
For it’s only together, that we become whole.

Our love is all of this, wondrous and true ,
For we have become One… One, from two.

Great tribute to Barbara and I am sure she deserves it and lives up to it. You have given her love and it will be there til death. Great love like this is hard to find and should be treasured by both. Such profound words of wisdom too. You both gave your hearts to each other and Love Makes the World Go Round.

Now I know why your poetry is so endearing. It is a journal of the soul. It is a day by day -- no! an hour by hour recounting of a man's love for his woman. There is a feeling of immediacy that draws one into the very essence of the lives of Doug and (now we know her name) Barbara. At the end of each poem I feel like I'm closing the book and locking it with the key, then stealing quietly out of the room and back into my life. Thank you for sharing yours.

Doug,
Beautiful. That's the only word I can come up with. Your words speak volume's. A beautiful piece by a great writer.

Doug,
To say you have a way with words is a pathetic understatement. The woman in your life must still be catching her breath....
Great work.
