This poem is based on the Norman Rockwell painting above entitled "The Interloper". It appeared on the cover of the March 12, 1927 issue of "The Saturday Evening Post".

As I sat on the bench reading my book,
A rugged man sat down to take a look,
An apparent interest in my reading he took.

He leaned forward the better to see.
In that moment I had the urge to flee,
But he turned and nodded to me.

His dress looked to be a man of a ship.
I noticed at his feet he set his grip.
Scanning the pages he urged me to flip.

I continued to read with an awful dread.
He apparently approved nodding his head.
Standing to leave, “Thanks, I needed that” he said.

You got all that from one painting???? Impressive, to say the least,,,, and after reading it and re-examining the photo, I see it all too. Surprised I hadn't noticed it sooner.

Well done Lowell. Thanks Dick
