Dusk is suddenly upon us,
Purple and indigo
Mingle with faint pink
 Brushstrokes overhead;
A distant chattering grows louder
As a mass of Starlings swarm,
Half a million strong;
All have one intention,
To roost in warm assembly.

Frantic, flapping wings
Drive them to their chosen trees.
But, before they finally retire
To each his favourite branch
We are treated for a while
To an amazing acrobatic display –
A superbly synchronized
Aerial ballet;
No pair of wings
 Touches another,
All are in perfect harmony
At each twist and turn
Until, at last, they gradually
Swoop down to their rest
And the living black cloud
Dissolves, until
Their next performance.
