Beat the rhythm of dark blue love,
years drifting from continent to sea,
slavery to freedom, salvation
in the work of becoming a man.

Listen in the flesh, and see within
that sweet dark face a mirror
to your own secret wish:

to find your rhythm, your country,
and the patriotism of brotherly love.

All songs belong to you, to everyone --
proving that even Time can be taught
to sing by the dignity of a man.
