a old piece as a response to a reading of the devotional poems of Rabi'a whose work deeply impressed me.

Rabi'a

Reading the beautiful poems of Rabi'a,
I felt ashamed, my faithlessness
a kind of nameless husk.
Where and when did I abandon my life
to distraction and despair?

At what point did I walk away
from the fight, crying in my grief
for battles waged in sleep?
My illusions of having won or lost?

As I read on I was consoled
by my emptiness, silence and longing
coming to me like old friends
I could still recognize
if not name.

When our dreams forsake the names we wish to recall then we join the journey to quest for our past.
