There was a day when I thought of giving up.
I didn’t feel as if I could handle any more pain.
Take the easy way out, I told myself.
No more suffering, just get it over with.
Then I saw you across from me.
Your somber face as you slept.
As the burden fell from my eyes,
My throat closed with disgust.
How could I leave you behind?
How selfish would I be to forget you?
I must find that part with in me,
The part that will stand strong against adversity.
I found my strength when I looked at you,
Hidden away in a dark corner of my being.
You were there holding the smallest torch.
Its flame nearly extinguished, by the cloud of darkness.
I took a step closer
I balled up my fists, and the fire grew.
I pressed further into the tunnel,
I found you there, surrounded with my pain.
I vowed to free you from your prison.
If not for you, I would have conceded.
The fight would have left me long ago.
You are the reason I press forward.
You are worth the struggle.
I will stand for you, with you,
Until I am taken away.
