A poem about wanting someone to love you who does not love you

I Don't Have To Love You

By Sherry Bach

I hear the phone

I hope it's you

Your voice always makes me smile

You say hello

I close my eyes

Haven't seen you in awhile

I listen to how your day has been

Then you start to talk about her again

And the questions come flooding back

Why do I have to love you?

And why can't you be

Someone who notices

And sees into the heart of me?

I find it hard to believe

When you look into my eyes

That you never see I love you

And it kills me inside

I feel the pain

Not the first time

I've been in this place before

Can't find the strength

To let you go

My heart always hopes for more

You listen to how my day has been

Then you start to talk about her again

And my fears come flooding back

I don't have to love you

If you can't be

The one who notices

And sees into the heart of me

If I find love hard to believe

When you look into my eyes

Then I really should not love you

Or let it kill me inside

Living this has been my hobby.
Only lately has my consciousness started to grasp a way out.
But it is my natural state indeed.
